Product Reviews

Great quality portable keyboard! Minor learning curve.

My thorough video review as someone who types 100+ wpm on standard computer keyboards. So can you still type fast on a keyboard like this? Is it too small like some keyboards tend to be? Watch my video and see!Note: I’ve owned the keyboard for one day and made this video review the next day, after I felt I’d gotten familiar enough with it.I’m trying not to put too many details here if I’ve already said them in the video, but I’ll say this: overall I like it. It’s durable, I can type fast on it, it’s wireless, and it folds up. Take your keyboard with you! How cool is that? Now when I need to type some emails or messages, this keyboard will come to my rescue. I hate typing on touch screens. It’s the one thing I never liked about mobile devices. There are a couple things that differ this from a regular keyboard that may really bug people who are used to typing 100% properly, which isn’t me. I’m a rebel and don’t use my pinky like I’m supposed to. I kinda have my own typing style, but anyway:1: Right shift isn’t standard size; it’s small and so the up arrow is where I was expecting shift to be. Minor; left shift is normal.2: The whole number row is moved over one to the right. This will throw off those who don’t look at the keyboard while typing. I still tend to look at the number keys while I type so I can adjust. (update 1 month later: I am still getting the numbers wrong… this has been the biggest problem now, I can’t seem to get used to it. I type 1 instead of 2 all the time)P.S. If you’re getting the language pop up when you capitalize letters (shift+space actually), it’s the Samsung Keyboard I believe, and the way I fixed it required rooting. So I rooted, then used a program to move the .apk file of the Samsung Keyboard to a different folder (rather than deleting it forever). Works perfectly and I can always move it back! Now watch the video please! :) This is a good little keyboard!

It’s always some dang thing

I really want to give this a 3.9 or something, because it deserves better than a 3. Because it is a really lovely little keyboard, and it alllllmoooossssst does the trick. It’s by far, by very very far, the best foldable pda keyboard I’ve tried since that wonderful old iGO one for Handspring and PalmPilot years back. But there’s always some chronic flaw with these things, and this time it’s them having put the arrow up key where the right shift key goes. I try and I try but I still get going and try to shift and hit that arrow, land in the sentence above, and have typed into it before I can stop. Typing buzz-kill, slow down, cleanup, try to get going again and not do it next time – splack, dangit! repeat. The delete key has a similar problem but is slightly easier to adapt to. But like a lot of the other reviwers, this right shift key is hard to adapt to for some reason.Note to the designers: switch the shift and up arrow keys, you shouldn’t have preserved the four arrow configuration at the expense of the shift, the shift is much more important, more used. All venting aside, this is a charm of a keyboard. Other than those two keys I am using this lovingly with my iPhone 6 and am floating on digital air in between my squabbles with that damn shift key.

If you hate touch screen typing, give it a try.

I’m using the keyboard to type this review. It pairs easily enough. After a being disconnected from a device, for a while, it reconnects easily enough, although there is a 5 second or so delay. So, far, I haven’t had any stutters typing this review, but while using with Google Docs, I get frequent key repeats. For example, I type ‘a’ and get ‘aaaaaaaa.’ This is a long enough paragraph, that I’m going to put the blame for that one with Good Docs, and not the Keyboard. This review is longer than I would normally make it, just to get a better sense of how well it works. I’ve used it on or off for a few months now, and this is the best it has worked. (I have used it all most exclusively for cloud based apps, so I’m going to chalk it up to that. )Tl;dr* It pairs easily.* The travel on the keyboard is good enough. (It’s not a mechanical keyboard, but it has a satisfying feel. Better than a touch screen)* The keyboard appears to be about 91% normal size. (At a guess.) If you think network keyboards are too small, then this device is not for you.* Some of the keys are in the wrong place. 1,2,3,4,&5 are moved one key to the right, but 5 - 10 are in the right place. The Right shift key is ` key too far right: in it’s place is the up arrow. That is annoying, but I got used to it after a few hours.WARNING If you use their keyboard, it will ask for access to your contacts. They suggest you use their keyboard to remove the on screen keyboard, and it does that, but why do you need access to my contacts? Android can be paranoid about permissions, so maybe their is a legitimate reason.Another thing to keep in mind is that all keyboards are keystroke loggers. It’s just how they work. So I would not use this keyboard for sensitive material. All in all, If you hate on screen keyboards, do not deal with sensitive information, and type a lot, then it’s worth the $30-ish bucks it will cost.Picture is of keyboard and Google Nexus 7 for size comparison.
