In order to meet the increasing need of Raspberry Pi compatible camera modules. The Arducam team now released another add-on mini camera module for Raspberry Pi series boards which is fully compatible with official one. The board itself is tiny, at around 25mm x 24mm, which makes it perfect for mobile or other applications where size and image quality are important. It connects to Raspberry Pi by way of a short ribbon cable. The camera is connected to the BCM2835/BCM2836 processor on the Pi via the CSI bus, a higher bandwidth link which carries pixel data from the camera back to the processor. This bus travels along the ribbon cable that attaches the camera board to the Pi. The sensor itself has a native resolution of 5 megapixels, and has a fixed focus lens onboard. In terms of still images, the camera is capable of 2592 x 1944 pixel static images, and also supports 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p60/90 video. It attaches to Raspberry Pi by way of one of the two small sockets on the board upper surface. This interface uses the dedicated CSI interface, which was designed especially for interfacing to cameras.

While I am waiting on my replacement camera I can only really comment on what I have and customer support. First, what I received as of high quality though my camera was faulty. Secondly, and more important, my experience with customer support has been fantastic! They actually work with you to try and resolve the technical issue. They were pleasant and polite and provided great information.Bottom line is that this is the company you want to go with. They will treat you right and provide you with some nice hardware for your project.
I used this in conjunction with a Raspberry Pi Zero and 6 in 1 Kit for Raspberry Pi Zero to make a tiny home video security camera using the free Motion software and Raspbian. Captures crisp 1920x1080 photos. No complaints. When you set this up, make sure that you do not put the flat cable in upside down. The copper contacts should be down facing the board, not upwards at you, when you’re plugging it in. I made that mistake and it resulted in some head-scratching on my part.
The 5 Mpx camera is more compatible and cheaper. I will continue to buy these instead of the new 8 Mpx.
For the price, this is a great camera. And it includes ribbon cables for Pi A/B/3 and for Pi Zero. I’m making a very small web/body/security camera fitting in a cigarette pack-sized container. This camera is just the ticket to use with the RPi-Cam-Web-Interface. Downloaded videos are sharp and frame rate is very decent.
Ribbon cable had a slight tear in it after fumbling around with the Pi and the Camera while setting everything up. Had to purchase another which was Raspberry official. Comparing the quality of the two cables, the official one is much more durable. Other than the cable, the cam has performed perfectly and has decent enough image quality for what I need it for.
It’s a PiCam, it works, I’m using for my telescope to capture images. Better than I expected.
A+ product! The camera is what I needed for a project! Even at 5 meg raw image they are high quality!
Great design and quality. Would definitely buy again. Extra cable for Pi zero was a real plus. Works flawlessly with all my applications.
DOA
works well and happy with the purchase
Nice camera.
Poorly designed on board camera connector blocks unit from snapping into stock Zero case. Cannot be forced, sloppy connection, only held in by closed case.
Works great! No issues making it work out of the box. Beginner level easy.
Works as described.Whipped up a quick 30 second webcam working on a tor hidden service in minutes.
Good camera, not as good as the official 8 Megapixels, but it does the job.
Very poor quality images. Better off getting a Micro USB OTG adapter and buying a used/inexpensive Logitech/MSFT webcam that will provide much better quality images for your…
This review is for the Arducam 5 Megapixels 1080p Sensor OV5647 Mini Camera Video Module with 15 Pin 1.0mm Pitch to 22 Pin 0.5mm and 15pin to 15pin 1.
The camera works fine but the ribbon was too thick in the connector side, so while trying to secure it, broke mi camera socket.
