I’ve ordered CanaKit’s Raspberry Pi 2 Ultimate Starter Kit in the past for myself and my students, and been quite happy with them. But CanaKit’s new Raspberry Pi 3 Ultimate Starter Kit leaves a few things to be desired which I hope they’ll be able to resolve, as this is otherwise a great way to jump in.1) The position of the processor cutout is in the wrong place in the new clear case. You would need to use a file or jig saw to enlarge the cutout so that it is in the proper position.2) The heatsink which was delivered is considerably smaller than what shipped with CanaKit’s older RPi2 Ultimate Kits, and is also smaller than the heatsink pictured in product shots. Given the higher power output of the Broadcom BCM2837 SoC, I notice that my processor runs considerably hotter during compute-intensive tasks, which is a bit worrisome.3) CanaKit’s kit price is perhaps $15 higher than where it should be, adding up all the component prices. Perhaps this will change as the supply chain grows and demand goes down. We’ll see. I bought my kit despite the obvious price hike.
Very experienced IT professional here but totally new to the Raspberry Pi. This is a great, completely turn-key computer (but you’re going to have to add a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for a complete, usable system). The (included) 32 GB micro SD card will boot up automatically once power is applied and will by default install the Raspbian operating system for you. I am very impressed (shocked, even) by the performance level of the Pi’s CPU and the video image quality provided by the HDMI connection. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support is built-in and both are enabled once the Raspbian OS install is complete. Raspbian includes a very simple, clean GUI environment, a special version of Google’s Chrome browser, a PDF viewer, multiple programming languages including Python, Java, and Scratch. It comes with dozens of Python-created games (including the source code), a special version of Minecraft which can be code-modified, and the full open-source LibreOffice office suite. From opening the box to a functional, Internet-connected computer took me about 20 minutes. A Raspberry Pi is still a step into the unknown for many - you will have to be willing to do some research on your own at times after you’ve completed the base installation. But there’s plenty of community support and raspberrypi dot org is a treasure-trove of information and advice for you. I have yet to use the breadboard and electronic components but my 10 year-old son is already searching for available projects.
Fantastic quality, great price and fast service.
Pi and SD card booted up and installed Raspbian perfectly. My only minor gripe is that the bottom of the case doesn’t quite snap in place the way it should. If I force it, I’m afraid it’ll crack.
This is my 1st Raspberry PI and friends told me this is the one to get Raspberry Pi 3 with Wifi and Blue Tooth on Board. The included 32G SD card made it easy to set and get running. The Canakit Quick Start Guide gave execellant instructions. Read the guide twice before connectioning the Included Power suppply.I put the Clear Case Round the RP3. Then I connected a powered USB Hub I had then plugged in my USB Mouse and Keyboard to powered Hub. Inserted SD Card. Attached a HD 24 inch TV with the included HDMI Cable. Then turned on the power to the TV selected the HDMI input. Finally after everything else was connected then I plugged in the 2.5 amp power supply to the RP 3. I watched as the Raspbrian OS was installed.. Within a few minutes I had function Raspberry PI 3 with GUI up and displaying. Explored the Menu and some Command Line inputs.. Yes having been a Unix Admin in past life helped me go faster but the Raspberry Pi for Beginners book I had purchased months before had also helped. With out reading the instrucitions I pulled the Menu down to connect to the Internet. I noticed some activity in the upper right hand corner of the screen. I clicked on the icon was promted for my Verizon Home WiFi access password entered it. Typed in gmail.com on the brower address line and was prompted for my Gmail user name and password. Enter them and was ready to send my 1st email from my new Raspberry Pi in less than 45 minutes after opening the box.I highly recommend getting the New Raspberry Pi 3 skip the Pi 2 and the extras . With the Pi 3 having the WiFi built in i’s snap to use.
Canakit makes great kits for the raspberry pi and this is a great jumping off point for more advanced projects. The official case is non-permanent and can be disassembled easily to add or remove the breakout ribbon cable. And you can leave the top off in case you have a hat for your pi.
Amazing is all I can say. 20 minutes out of the box to up and running. That includes set up and install in case.I set a static IP and use wi-fi.Found examples and python libraries for the ultrasonic range finder (I had one) and the MPU-6050 gryo/accellerometervery happyIt took 2 tries to get it into the case correctly, so just make sure the end that the memory card goes in is tucked under the small tabs otherwise it won’t sit flatthe breadboard is excellent quality, the break0out cable and connector to the breadboard is a good fit too
I don’t know much about this stuff, but….My computer-nerd kids loved these kits. Apparently they are quite powerful for such a little thing.
This is a great starter kit and the breadboard has made some of my first project very easy to implement.
First time buying a raspberry pi, I couldn’t have made a better choice choosing a starter kit.
Love this kit
everything u Need to start with. especially liked the gpio breadboard Interface to use my “toys” from my arduinos as well
Great kit. Easy to setup and use. Surprised how powerful this little computer really is. Once you have the basics, then much easier to build on from there.
Lots of fun
Assembly was a breeze. Everything powered up and worked great at first. After just a few weeks of use, the OS will not load.
Can’t beat this deal for an all-in-one package. I ended up using my raspberry pi for a retropie kit, so I don’t use nearly everything that was included, but whenever I decide to…
Great kit, 100% recommended
