The zoom makes all the difference

I normally shoot with an SLR–Canon 5D Mk IV or sometimes a 7D Mk II. I’ve owned several small cameras aimed at pro photographers, like the G12, G16, G7X and G7X Mk II. All are great little point-and-shoots, but I’ve found I never have a use for them. The images aren’t good enough to sell and I’m not one for snapshots; they’re too noisy to use shooting bands in bars (my hobby) and don’t have enough reach to get near the stage. The G7X Mk II would probably take a decent landscape shot but that means a tripod to keep the ISO down…and I just don’t bother. But this camera, with it’s zoom capability, offers something different. The image quality isn’t quite up to the other point-and-shoots but y’know, it’s not bad. It requires good light, with it’s f/6.9 aperture at full zoom, and I wish it could shoot raw. But given those limitations, it still allows me to shoot things I can’t or won’t shoot with an SLR.That claim of a “40X zoom” is a little duplicitous–they’re multiplying from the widest range and not from the 50mm we usually consider normal. It’s really more like 20 times, from 24-960mm equivalent. However, that’s like mounting a Sigma 150-600 on a 7D Mk II–and that’s a serious commitment to the shoot. With the SX730 I can wander down to the beach and have a realistic chance of snapping a bird photo, or a surfer. Holding the camera steady at full zoom is the biggest challenge, but I’m getting the hang of it and I’m pleasantly surprised just how good the image stabilization is. I think there’s another mode I could try that would improve that, too, but I’ve hardly left P and Av. The macro capability is good; my closeup of the flower looked great in Lightroom but lost some detail when compressed–I think that’s where the lack of raw data really hurts. The photo of my old film camera what slightly sharpened in Lightroom, along with color/contrast/clarity but I think you can see it’s pretty good–and I shot that at full zoom and 1/25th of a second! (It took a few tries, though.) Shooting in shade I was able to bring down the highlights and raise the shadows, so the bit depth must be pretty good. The musician shot…well, the camera had just arrived and I didn’t have the focus down–I think it could do a sharper pic. The nice thing is, I shot the show with a 70-200 on my full-frame, which means I was able to get shots like this from 5 times the distance. Can’t wait to try it in a big concert venue (where I probably couldn’t bring an SLR anyway). It’ll require good stage lighting, though; no question.I’ve only had it a couple of days and used it on two shoots; photos are attached. I see other reviewers have had faulty copies–mine has been flawless so far. Battery life seems to be about 250 shots. Haven’t done much with the video yet. To summarize: this doesn’t come close to a 5D4 image but it’s pretty close to the G7X Mk II in good lighting, and that zoom range allows shots the G7X just can’t do.

You won’t be disappointed!!!!

Best camera I’ve ever owned. Easy to operate and couldn’t be happier with the pictures. The wi-fi/Bluetooth feature Is easy to navigate and worked great. See my pics below from out trip just two days after getting camera.

Not as good as the SX720 that preceded this model.

Not as good, overall, as the SX720 that preceded this model. Wide angle shots are not as detailed as they were with the SX720 and the colors are simultaneously less vibrant and accurate (there is now a yellowish hue to outdoor shots). Menu has radically changed from the SX720 for the worse: i.e. less intuitive and harder to access various settings. Requires deep diving into the menu just to select and delete a single picture! The camera’s video capabilities (limited to 1080p) have not been improved and seem even less detailed than the SX720. About the only good thing I can say about this camera is macro capabilities are good and its medium focal length telephoto shots are sharp and detailed.

Five Stars

It takes very nice quality pictures. Satisfied with my purchase

Lightweight, great pics, Love the Tilt LCD screen

Purchased the Black one-actually the color is dark gray/black on 6/15/17 and worked fine. No issues with battery and focus. I borrowed a Canon Mark II G7 and that camera is stunning especially with it’s Wide angle specs but this Canon SX730 HS is good too especially for being $300 less. I love the tilt up LCD screen to take selfies. Shutter seems slightly slow and loads a bit slow when reviewing playback photos but other than that-I’m highly satisfied with this camera.Wifi to IPhone is a breeze–a lot easier than the G7x.

Great camera

Took this on a tough 21 day vacation and it stood up to all the knocking around and in and out of the bag and some rainy and very cold weather. Pictures were sharp and I love the focus, both near and far.

Love this little camera

So far so good. Nice little camera with great zoom and features. Did not get 5 stars because it lacks raw and no viewfinder. It will be great to just drop in your purse. Love the zoom. The price was very reasonable. Picture quality is just fine. Not good for low light. But in the sun great. But you buy this for the compact size and long zoom. My new favorite camera.

Excellent travel camera

I bought this as a travel camera, something better than relying on my phone, with the need for a super fast quickdraw for sudden photo opportunities–it delivered, spectacularly.

Five Stars

Great camera! Had it for a couple of weeks now, takes great pics and the zoom is AMAZING! Here are two pictures I took from the same spot.

This camera does not connect by wifi to apple computers

Just to clear things up regarding wi fi connectivity to iMac or Macbook Pro etc. This camera DOES NOT CONNECT to Apple computers unless your apple computer is over 5 years old…

Great size!

I really like the size of this camera - it fits easily in a purse. And it takes really good pictures!

SX 730 Camera Will Not Focus

When taking video with zoom the camera will not focus on the image. I also have the Canon SX 720 and its performance is far superior. Do not buy until Canon comes out with a fix.

I love this camera it is way worth the investment

I love this camera it is way worth the investment. I am a canon only girl and needed a point and shoot to basically throw in my bag so I didn’t have to lug my bigger canon and…

Impressive at first look

Well designed body, very easy to handle, seems solidly built.Focus and zoom are excellent, images are clear.

SX730HS

Can’t go wrong with Canon P&S cameras. Still have a couple from years back. Still work great. When 1st getting this camera I thought, 40x zoom?

A very good one for amateur like me

It’s a very good purchase of camera, not big not too small it’s just the perfect size. Just what I needed for traveling. Recommend it :)
