I just bought a new Dremel after leaving mine behind in one crazy heck of a move. When I bought new heads for it, I realized some of them required the EZ lock mandrel to be used–the best ones did. If you buy a Dremel set with several tools, this may already come with it but my new Dremel did not have it. And really, it’s something you’ll want. This allows you to change out the heads on your Dremel in a snap–no special tools, far less time. And that can be a huge bonus if you are working on something creative, which I do all the time with my Dremel tool. Heck, I use it for everything from cutting spurs grown too long on my rooster (he doesn’t feel it, but he sure feels inconvenience in walking when they are too long!), to doing creative cuts in wood, to doing fast trims when putting reclaimed wood up on a wall, and more.Quite frankly, I use it quite a bit. And time is money, so in my mind this pays for itself in one day of Dremel use. Not only that, but in my opinion Dremel is moving towards heads that only use this–some of the best ones can’t be used without it so it is simply not only a better way of using the Dremel, but for many of us, a must-have.Simple. Easy. Saves Time.Enough said with that alone.
The EZ Lock Mandrel works as advertised. It allows for very quick and easy replacement of cutting, sanding and buffing heads, No tools are required to change heads once the mandrel is mounted in the Dremel tool. It is a big improvement over the screw head mandrel which requires a small screw to be removed from the top of the mandrel each time you want to change or replace a head. The only down side is that the mounting bracket which fits the cutting, sanding or buffing head to the mandrel tends to break away from the head too often. I recently completed a project using the EZ Lock Cutting heads designed for plastic to cut a piece of plexiglass to make a 32” round cover for a coffee table. The tool worked brilliantly the edges cleaned up with a light buff from the EZ Lock buffing pads. The problem was that I went through at least 6 cutting heads due to the fact that the metal bracket meant to mount the cutting head to the EZ Lock Mandrel kept separating from the head, rendering the cutting wheel useless. I finally switched back to the traditional mandrel and finished the job without having to change cutting heads. Note that the EZ Lock Cutting Wheels did not wear down and still had plenty of life remaining - they just broke away from the mount. This could have been because I was using them to cut a radius which caused tension on the mount, but I did not force them and they were cutting fine. If you are making straight cuts, and will have to change heads, this tool is worth the investment. Also note, the EZ Lock Mandrel will only work with heads that are designated as EZ Lock. You will not be able to use the EZ Lock Mandrel with other manufacturer’s tool heads as you can with the standard mandrel. The only other downside of the EZ Lock line up is the cost. The replacement tool heads are about three times more expensive that their standard mandrel counterparts, but you pay for convenience.
The only caveat I have about these is how I have busted two of them in the past. One chipped away at the gray-green part that moves, right in the contact zone for the discs it holds in place, so it would not longer hold them. Another wound up with a bent mandrel due to nothing more than an imbalance in the centrifugal force that occurred right after a disc chipped; this happened so fast, I couldn’t cut off the power before the thing just bent from spinning off balance. So.. recognize that you will have to replace them from time to time. That’s probably why I own something around 10 of these at any given time. I keep them in my larger (stationary) Dremel tool set, and a couple go with me in my portable set. but you will need these to run any “EZ Lock” Dremel tool head, and those are such a time-saver, when moving from cutting to grinding to sanding to polishing all in one swoop. …which you will do, sometimes.
It might be hard to bring yourself to purchase one of these but after you do you will be glad. Change out is easier and you can keep working on your project instead of stopping and taking time to screw out the little screw, hold everything and screw it back together. Keeping track of the screw wrench is easer as you can use it when you need to change out tools or collets. I would recommend this.
Ordered this one as a backup for my other trusty one I seem to always misplace. The EZ lock system is Dremel’s best invention since the original Dremel. I use mine with the fiber cutting disks several times a week and would be lost without it. I have lots of Dremel bits of almost every type but this one is in my machine 99% of the time.
So cheaply made! I’ve bought 2 of these and with both of them, the spring mechanism that holds the wheels in place ends up breaking so that it hangs loose and can’t hold them in place. Nice idea that could be so useful and handy but flawed design. It’s annoying having to replace these after every job or two especially with it being such a light workload that should be one and done.
This is one of the best Dremel gadgets ever hatched. It eliminates the thread-on style, lets you twist on any accessory that has the matching hub. Very handy. Also a little spendy, but what the heck, we all want easy, right?
My dremel is pretty old & I was looking for something that would cut better than the regular cutting wheels. I actually found the wonderful new heavy duty cutting wheel first, then realized I needed this little part in order to use that. So I ordered both and am so pleased with both.
you have to buy special expensive grinding wheels for this to work…worthless.
This is what I needed & didn’t know it! It’s added such a convenience to be able to change attachments so quickly, & even better that it fits my Dremel knockoff.
Great!
As advertised.
Blades break instantly. I ran through 10 blades for one project.
Es bueno
Worked perfect. So much easier than the old way.
Love it.
Works very well, arrived quickly and packaged nicely. Thank you!
