Having had this monocular for a few days now, I have to say I generally like the product, but the manufacturer’s/seller’s info is inaccurate, and I will not rate a product as 4 or 5 stars that basically lies about what it is.Pros:It has a good rubberized grip that helps prevent it from easily falling out of your hands and is comfortable enough to hold. In addition, the optics appear bright and crisp, although they get just a little fuzzy out near the edges. Focusing knob is also easy to adjust one-handed, although it gets a little stiff when used outdoors in colder temperatures. Overall, for a mere $16 (at time of this posting), I feel like there is decent value in the product and I will keep it for what it is.Cons:The product being sold is NOT what it is advertised to be. As listed both here on Amazon as well as printed directly on the product itself, the manufacturer markets this product as a 12x50 monocular, meaning it is supposed to have 12x magnification and an objective lens with a diameter of 50mm. As shows in photos, neither of these statements are accurate. The inside diameter of the objective lens tube is 1.67” = 42.4mm. Take into further account that there is a ring clip to hold the lens in place that decreases the light-gathering ability by about another 2mm and you now have about 40mm of light-gathering capability. This is a reduction of about 36% area/light-gathering ability compared to the 50mm it’s marketed as, which makes quite a significant difference when trying to use these in low light. The other major problem I have with their advertised specifications is the magnification. These are supposed to be 12x, but they’re closer to about 8-9x at best. I took two photos at the same distance with a camera at the same zoom level - one shot through the monocular, and the other unaided. Superimposing the unaided photo on top of the one shot through the monocular, the monocular magnifies the image such that 1 3⁄8” (1.375) on a ruler gives the same apparent viewing size as the full 12” of the ruler unaided (please forgive the weird 15 inch ruler in the photo). Simple math shows that the magnification is therefore about 8.7x… far short of the stated 12x.Again, I like the optics and product overall, but I HATE being lied to in product descriptions. The manufacturer needs to sell the product for what it is and let its attributes and value sell the product, not augment the facts and sell their product as something it obviously isn’t.
This review is for the Ebestgoods 12x50 monocular telescope. As stated by other reviewers, this is more like an 8x35 scope. It has about the same magnification as my inexpensive 8x50 binoculars, but notably less field of vision. For the price, it’s optics are OK, but definitely not as bright as my binoculars. The adjustments can focus down to less than 10’ if required. It’s light and compact which makes it easy to take on hikes and not feel neck strain like my binoculars.
I bought this monocular for my kids. They love to go to sporting events, concerts, etc. They love it. It is not high powered like one of our binoculars but it perfect for our needs. The monocular is good quality and comes with a storage case, lens cloth, lanyard and lens cap. It is easy to focus and provides a clear view. I love it because it is small and I can throw it in my purse and go. Great product for a great price.
Like it..
Very Nice
After receiving it, I can confirm that this is definitely not a 12x50 monocular. The magnification is only 8x and the front (optical) lens is only 40mm. I needed something with a 12x power and 50mm optical lens and this was not it. Therefore, I returned it. I had a 8x40 monocular that was identical to this one in field of view and magnification. I could even use them both as a binocular. That’s one way I confirmed it that this is a 8x40 monocular (the seller later confirmed my findings as well). That being said for a 8x40 monocular it’s a decent one that is why I’m not giving it a 1-star.
comments powered by DisqusOrdered this for my hubby - he uses it to look for wildlife and the like out our living room window. Small and compact but has a decent magnification. He really likes his and uses it frequently. Reasonably priced at $15.00 - good value for the quality and magnification. In order to understand how I determine my star ratings, know that I base all my reviews of every product on the following criteria, whether I pay full price or purchase on sale or with a discount:- quality: are the design and construction representative of good or excellent quality?- appearance: as is appropriate for each product.- functionality: does the product function as promised?- price: what is the selling price at the time I post my review?- value: do the quality and price make this a good value purchase?I do not know, nor do I have any affiliation with, the seller of this product.
