Product Reviews

Fun novelty item – takes cute pictures, but they’re TINY (and pricy)

I’m not sure what to make of this little “INSTAX Mini” camera. As someone who is very familiar with the original Polaroid cameras back in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, I was curious as to what this Fuji version had to offer. The value of an instant camera is that you can take pictures and see them (or give them away) instantly. Back when the Polaroid was all the rage, this was a big deal since ordinary film needed to be sent out for processing, meaning you wouldn’t see your photos (much less be able to share them with friends and family) for a week or more. These days, however, digital photos are the norm – and you can give a digital photo instantly (and free of charge) via text or email. Of course, that requires everyone to have access to a phone or computer. This camera does what it says it does. It comes with two 3-volt lithium batteries, which are easy to install, and an instruction sheet (mainly graphic – minimal written directions) to help you figure out how to take pictures. You just load the film cartridge into the camera, press the power button, aim, and shoot – that’s it. I took a variety of shots (including a few “selfies”) to get a feel for how the camera works. And it does work; all of the pictures I took developed well (although the auto flash got in my way a few times). It took me about fifteen minutes to take all ten of the pictures included in the film cartridge. The pictures themselves are tiny – they are the size of a standard credit card (3 ½ by 2 inches), and the image itself is even tinier (2 ½ by 1 ¾ inches). The picture pack included with my camera was the Rainbow pack, meaning the photos come framed in a variety of rainbow colors. They’re cute – I can see this being fun for children’s parties, or holiday gatherings, or any family event where people might get excited about tiny instant pictures. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the ones I took. They’re too small to frame or put in a scrapbook. And since they’re not digital, if I give them away I won’t have a copy for myself.Bottom line, this would be a fun party favor (if it weren’t so expensive). The film itself costs $9 for a 10-pack (meaning each tiny picture costs 90 cents), and the camera itself is over $60. I owned several Polaroid cameras back in the day, and I had fun with them. But the pictures were never as good as the ones I took with a regular camera – and there’s just no comparison with what an inexpensive digital camera (or iPhone!) can do today. This isn’t a camera meant for photographers. It’s a pricey gimmick with limited use. If you’re OK with that, go for it – for me, the novelty isn’t worth the price.READ MORE

Great Fun

Got this for a graduation party for guest to do a VISUAL Guest Book. Doesn’t feel cheap or like it will fall apart. Photo quality is what is expected from an instant photo. Tried it last night and took me back to the 80’s with polaroid cameras and being excited to see a picture develope. My brother was able to use it and he excited for last day of school to use it with friends.

Takes good pictures. However

Takes good pictures. However, I recommend buying film by the bundle for retakes. Adjusting the setting to achieve the perfect picture can be a little annoying. My kids love to borrow it. The camera makes a great gift for kids and teens.

Love the camera

Love the camera! Especially with the colorful film. They are a bit small but make for good souvenirs and mementos. The camera is nice and compact. Just remember to take the little cover off when you take the picture otherwise it comes out blurry, I found out the hard way lol

I really think this is a cool camera

Easy and works great. Gave to an 11 yr old who really isn’t familiar with physical pictures, just digital. Whole new concept, let alone convenience. I wish the film had more than 10 exposures but it would make it heavier so no ding for that. It is hard to train a young person not to blow thru 10 shots in 2 minutes like he can on an iphone. lol…so thnk about that. Again, this is not something to reduce a star for. They have thought of everything on this camera. As a new feature, i would recommend that they add camera strap hooks back on this version.

Colorful Fun

These Polaroids are so fun! Every one is a different color so it adds additional pop to your pictures / scrapbooks. The film lasts for awhile too. I think I had this box unopened for 6 months and it still worked fine when I put it in.

Bought this for our wedding guest book!

You don’t buy this for the quality, but for the fun. My wife and I bought this for our wedding guest book. People took selfies and put their photo inside. It was nice having a small selfie mirror next to the lens.

Super fun. I took it on a trip to …

Super fun. I took it on a trip to Italy and Greece with me so as to tape little photos into my travel journey as I went along and it was compact enough for that. Some things I wanted to take without a flash (priceless art, etc), but there is still a flash and the photos come out light, but what do you expect? They are instant polaroids.
