Product Reviews

Here’s To The Fools Who Dream

La La Land is one of the best films of 2016. Its seamless combination of music and storytelling is reminiscent of classic musicals from the 50s and 60s. The performances are top-notch and the two leads have an unmistakable chemistry together (helped by their previous on-screen romance in Crazy, Stupid, Love.) Their characters are flawed, but that’s what entices the viewer to join them on this emotional journey. The score and musical numbers are absolutely memorable, even after one viewing. City of Stars and Another Day of Sun are my personal favorites, but there are many others that are, not only fantastic songs in their own right, but combined with some potentially iconic scenes in the movie, paint a picture that’s difficult to forget. The cinematography is beautiful, the choreography is stunning, and the camerawork is breathtaking. And that’s what La La Land is; breathtaking. No, it’s not perfect, as the film does peak towards the middle and the second half re-uses music and ideas from the first half, and personally I found there to be a couple of questionable casting choices, but those are minor nitpicks in what is otherwise a miracle production. I am very thankful that, in a world where superhero films and action blockbusters rake in the most dough, there are still producers out there willing to fund risky projects that can either fall and be forgotten, or rise and become instant classics. La La Land is fire. See it.

“Here’s to the ones who dream”

“Here’s to the ones who dream/Foolish, as they may seem/Here’s to the hearts that ache/ Here’s to the mess we make.” This song - “Fools Who Dream” - sung beautifully by Emma Stone as Mia Dolan during her career defining audition, pretty much sums up the plot for the romantic drama at the heart of the film. It is a touching story that somehow you wish will end another way but you realize and accept that it won’t. But getting past the drama, this is one of those movie musicals - a throwback to the classics - that are produced so rarely in the modern era. And this is an outstanding musical that will compare favorably to such classics as “Singing in the Rain”, “South Pacific”, “Carousel”, “Oklahoma” and others. Both Emma Stone as Mia Dolan, the aspiring actress/singer/dancer; and Ryan Gosling as Sebastian Wilder, the aspiring Jazz musician she falls in love with, deliver outstanding, award-caliber performances. Gosling is no Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly on the dance floor and his singing voice is not the best; but not all male stars of the classic musicals could sing well either - Rex Harrison in “My Fair Lady” is a case in point. Stone, however, excels as both a singer and a dancer, who would have been a worthy partner for either Astaire or Kelly. I already knew she was a gifted actress, who I’ve loved since seeing her in “The Help”; now I know she’s also a gifted singer and dancer. If you’re like I am and you love well made movie musicals and the magic and nostalgic feeling they give you when you watch them, you will love this film. I’m hoping its success will encourage the production of more like it!

What a great buy!

I saw this movie before the Academy Awards and thought it was fun and uplifting. My daughter and g-daughter were with me. So, when I saw this package with a DVD (for daughter) and a Blu-Ray (for me) and a digital copy for i-Tunes, I thought how perfect. I can keep one and gift the other two. The movie was wonderful. Of course, I love anything with Ryan Gosling!

Would like to have gotten a lot more behind the scenes

They’ll be studying this one in film school for years. A modern musical, first original HW musical in…forever. Would have been memorable with a different cast, but reigning America’s sweetheart Emma Stone makes it spectacular. Stone and Gosling are this generations Bogie and Bacall. Would like to have gotten a lot more behind the scenes, inside baseball movie making, plus cast interviews in the extra features.

Sucks you in

I was skeptical about this movie, but by the end I was completely sucked in. Highlight of the extras was discovering that Ryan Gosling not only played his own keyboard parts, but that he had also learned to play just for the film. Impressive.

I’ve watched this repeatedly, even though I’m not a big fan of the old musical films. Ryan is passable at singing and dancing, but he’s not the real star here. Not too formulaic, and really entertaining. If you have Amazon Prime, you can download the soundtrack for free. The songwriting is fantastic, but you’ll still want the movie. Nice to have family fare that’s engrossing and upbeat.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE!

I know a lot of people expected a oh so Grand musical and so were disappointed. I expected nothing and loved every minute of this movie. I am pretty sure I did because I have watched it over 14 times. Basically it is a love story with some wonderful dance scene. I cannot say enough about this movie except I love it, I love it, I love it! And by the way, the most I have ever watched a movie was 3 times and that included 2 times on TV.

Lively & Lovely !

Should’ve gotten the Oscar!! Would have, if the Academy didn’t feel it necessary to bestow the award for “guts” over “glamour”.

Not for me…

Couldn’t get into this one… didn’t like the movie.

The Best Movie of the Year!

What a fantastic film. Classic and cute. These two have an amazing chemistry on set.

Five Stars

the best feel good movie

Two Stars

Kind of slow moving, not my kind of show.

La La Lots!!!

Great movie.

Great movie

Great movie and extra material.

Five Stars

good movie

Not quite up to the hype.

Good, but not great, and does not justify all of the hype. Hollywood likes movies that don’t entertain as long as they are well played. I don’t share their enthusiasm.

Five Stars

I would give it 10 stars, i do give it 10

Five Stars
