Great starter kit for a budding scientist

I love these! We purchased them as a birthday gift, to be given with a pocket/portable microscope Carson MicroBrite Plus 60x-120x Power LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (MM-300) ($10 from amazon, and great quality). My six year old thought they were neat, and even my three year old found a few moments of fun looking at the “tiny dead ant” included! There are six slides, under the following categories: 1. Insects 2. Tiny Creature 3. Pollens & Spores 4. Textile Fibers 5. Plants 6. Animals. Each slide includes 4 specimans for a total of 24 from the set. The following are the specific specimens provided:1. Insects: (Locust leg, Worker bee wing, Bee antenna, Bee abdomen)2. Tiny Creatures: (Common red sponge, Angora rabbit hair, Ant, Mouse fur)3. Pollens & Spores: (Tulip pollen, Leaf spore, Pine tree pollen, Orange pollen)4. Textile Fibers: (Panya, Nylon, Wool, Handmade paper)5. Plants: (Stem of corn, Leaf of nerium, Onion rind, Silver berry scaly hair)6. Animals: (Cat hair, Canary feather, Dog hair, Sheep hair)Someone might find the inclusion of sheep hair and wool to be redundant, but I found it to be clever. There are subtle differences, and that can create an educational conversation to promote further learning. It will also push your young explorer to pay more attention to the “tiny” details.

Sufficient quality for kid or adult

Bought this set together with an Amscope for kids as a birthday present for a 6 yr old. The slides are plastic so that children will not easily break them. They are very good for a child quality experience. If you are expecting laboratory quality mounts, then this is not what you are looking for. I had no trouble viewing at low magnifications and up to 1200x. You can see detail in all the samples. These are not micro-tom sliced samples. Some better than others, but all of sufficient quality to use for the average kid or adult. The box they come in is paper/cardboard and can be reused to hold the slides. The top opens and can be folded back easily.I had a great time with them. I recommend and am sorry I didn’t get the full 2 box set.

These are great for girls, since girls love science!

These prepared slides along with a microscope were a big hit with my 6-year-old niece! We gave it took her for Christmas along with her first microscope (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I0CDSFY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s05?ie=UTF8&psc=1), a lab coat and goggles (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IVQHC0Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1), and a science kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BURAP2/ref=od_aui_detailpages04?ie=UTF8&psc=1).These slides offer a large variety of items for viewing under magnification and they light well from beneath. The have lots of interesting textures and patterns that really engage young and curious minds and allow them to start thinking of their surroundings microscopically! I love hearing all the “discoveries” she makes as she views these. She will then apply these observations to make hypotheses of what a new specimen she comes across might look like once magnified, too! I love how brilliant these young scientists are and how such tools help bring their love for science forward! After we got these for her, she told us she wants to grow up to be a science doctor so she can do lots of fun experiments because she loves science! How could you not just love a 6-year-old that already dreams of getting a PhD in microbiology!? Looks like next Christmas we will have to get her more science tools!I just hope thirty years from now she remembers who got her, her first set of slides and microscope. ;-)

Nice for a starter set but be ready to explain

Bought this for my grandson to go with his microscope. The slides are nice to have but they are very limited, many of the slides look the same (we had fly wings and bee wings ,cat fur) some could be seen clearly and others had to be imagined what they were supposed to look like. Maybe the other slides in the other packs are better quality but it is a childs toy so I can’t expect too much, but it would be good for the slides to be clearer so the child can recognize what ti is.

Nice variety but could use a few more insects…

I bought this set for my 7 year old niece and we viewed it together. The specimens seem very professionally done – well-dyed, clearly labelled, and constructed to stand up to the type of rough handling you’d expect from little hands. There are 5 specimens per slide so there really is a lot here to look at. There’s a broad variety of subjects and enough “odd” items to inspire lots of questions. Of everything we viewed, it was (surprisingly) the pollen samples that drew the most oohs and aahs from my niece. We did both find ourselves wishing for more insects, and the textile samples were rather “ho-hum”, but overall this is a nice set and, I think, worth the purchase.

easy to use and she thinks they are really cool

I bought this to accompany the Carson MicroBrite 20x-40x Zoom LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (MM-24) that I bought for my 7 year old daughter at Christmas time. The slides are durable, easy to use and she thinks they are really cool!

Three Stars

Specimens inside could be a LOT better. Not worth the money in my opinion.

Perfect addition to our home school supplies! Nice selection.

… be more variety to the slides but I was disappointed. However

I thought there would be more variety to the slides but I was disappointed. However, the child we gave them too seemed to love these to go with her microscope.
