Bought this for my 7 and 5 yr old boys. They love it and we are very glad to see their projects.

Awesome educational kit

Wow, leave it to Lego to make a fantastic product. I have researched robotics and science kits for months. Eventually decided on the Lego Wedo and so glad I did. I purchased this for my 5 and half year old even though Lego recommends 7+. My little one loves his lego and is very interested in robots and science. This kit is a perfect fit. It comes in one of those blue bins. Opening it you will find a bunch of bricks, beams and pulleys in the classic plastic bags. There is also a tray with a recommended spot for each of the items. Go to YouTube and watch the box and software videos. Almost no instructions in the box! 4 special pieces are in the kit:- the smart hub: this is really the brain with 2 io ports, Bluetooth and the software execution- a motor which can connect to the hub. This is your actuator- a motion sensor that connects to the hub and can detect objects- a tilt sensor that connects to the hub and registers an event when tilted in any direction.Since the hub has 2 ports, your build will take advantage of only 2 out of the 3 pieces you have.Once you open the bags and sort your pieces, install batteries in the hub and go up the url in the kit for the free software. We initially wanted to use it with an iPad, however after downloading and installing the app (which took almost an hour) we could not connect the hub to the iPad. It turns out our iPad is too old and does not support Bluetooth 4.0; a requirement to communicate to the hub,We switched to a Windows laptop. That took an additional hour for software download and installation (the download is a bit over 1 GB), but then the fun began. The software is well done and let’s you choose a guide. We started with building Milo (the rover). We wrote our first program (using blocks as in scratch) to send the robot back and forth in our family room. We then moved to the second unit where Milo finds a plant using the motion sensor. My little one was ecstatic, figuring what else can Milo find? A good engineering mission. In the next unit, we switched the motion sensor for the tilt sensor and now Milo can send messages to the base. We switched the messages and had a blast. My son’s reaction was to jump up and down saying “this is so cool”Words of advice:1- buy directly from Lego education, the price here is a ripoff2- check that you have a device that would work with it: apparently a pc or newer iPad are your best bet; very little android support so far!3- give yourself some time to setup; I am a computer engineer and it took me a couple of hours since I had the wrong device. Be patient, you won’t regret it!Lego rocks, thanks for a great product.READ MORE

Great Robot Kit - Geared for Elementary School Age

I’ve been using this in a robotics class in a public school for about a month now. Overall, I love it. The instructions are clear, the documentation is good, and the kids love it. I was able to get the class to build, program, and start documenting their projects in an hour. Many had no prior experience. This review is not about the price. You can get it for about half the price directly from Lego. There have been some complaints about bluetooth connection in the other reviews. It’s a bit fussy, but consistent once you get used to it. I numbered each kit, put P-Touch labels on the smart hubs, and named the smart hubs in Wedo according to the kit name. The kids always know which smarthub to connect to. You can also press the button and look for the green color change back at the iPad as well when you see multiple smarthubs all at once.As with most Lego kits, parts disappear. Oddly, the replacement kits only contain certain parts. Not the ones I needed. Make sure you assign kits to your student and hold them accountable to keep parts from disappearing. Ordering replacement parts is a pain. The software is also fantastic. The kids pick up on the programming concepts very quickly, and they love the music and other bells and whistles.Great kit from Lego!READ MORE

Unnecessary Redesign of Existing WeDo

Lego is reminding me of Apple, in a bad way. The connectors on the new WeDo 2.0 kit are incompatible with the existing Power Functions pieces. There was no real need to do this, and now the product is harder to use for FLL Jr. (since the only way to run the motor now is to program it via computer or tablet with correct bluetooth version). The software seems unchanged, so the only utility of the 2.0 set seems to be the untethering from the computer. I suppose that’s a good thing if you’re trying to make a car-type model, but the trade-offs negate that for me.

One Star

Overpriced. You can find the same set direct from LEGO for under $160

Not worth it for the price - Mind Storms cheap little brother

Buggy software, blue tooth doesn’t always connect. Poor version of Mind Storms. Not worth the price. For $100, I’d say OK, but not pushing $300.

I bought this item but received the wrong level of kit. Returned it, as the old we do software cost 85 bucks!

Bluetooth Connection doesn’t work

Purchased this for homeschooling and was so excited to use it with the expanded curriculum. However, we have had nothing but problems.
