I thought I lost my first SGN3, so immediately bought another. Oh sure, I re-researched it and thought about the Surefire and Manker, but I wanted the red LED, smaller size, and better charge port cover. The SGN3 is plenty bright for task lighting or walking after dark. Since it doesn’t require batteries and charges from common chargers, it is essentially free to use. And since it is so small, it has become as common in my pocket as a knife and Bluetooth. Being flat, it just disappears until you drop something under a seat, have to hotwire a computer, or get stuck hashing after dark. I often wind up holding it between my lips (so not as good as a true headlight, but better than having to go find one!). It does not stand up on its tail, but that’s fine. After several months of getting scratched by keys and coins, it has developed a nice “brassed” appearance (i.e. powdercoat worn off the edges). I suppose the “stonewashed” model would look new-ish forever, but I re-bought the same grey color. And then I found my original!Future improvements: suggest MecArmy makes it waterproof. I accidentally went swimming with it, and it didn’t work until I thoroughly dried it out. Doesn’t seem to be any long-term damage, but I consider that lucky.
Amazing device.
comments powered by DisqusI like this better than the Nitecore Tip, even though the tip can get brighter than this. I really like the form factor, the solid feeling, and the feel of the switch. I do wish it came on on the low setting first instead of medium, although that’s a personal preference. I’ve had zillions of flashlights over the years and this is one of my favorites. The red mode is great for when your eyes are adjusted to the dark and you don’t want to burn out your retinas (although you do have to cover the main LED when you first turn it on, then cycle past the blinding medium mode.) It’s worth the money. There are brighter llights and lights with better interfaces out there, but I’m thinking about getting another one or two of these I like it so much.
