Nikon Forestry Pro Range Finder

Actually what I needed for work! This unit is accurate, sturdy, easy to use and understand, compact, easy to read in bright sunlight. I work in the Telecommunication field and I needed a range finder to measure distance between utility poles and this unit fit the bill. You could purchase the TruPulse device, but expect to pay around $800 + for their range finders - I purchased the Nikon Forestry Pro for $300 and saving $500 is a big plus. The only negative to the device is the lazer does not display ranges less than 30 feet, but in my field that is not a big deal, because I can use my measure wheel for distances less than 30 feet. I would recommend this device to everyone looking for a range finder.

Crane operator’s best friend

I am a mobile crane operator, and I use this tool at least weekly if not daily. It helps me figure radius and boom length required for different situations. The best feature is the ability to show distances in feet. All of my crane charts are in feet, so there is no excess converting required. It is also very accurate. If I am going to work I don’t leave home without it. I would say it’s the most useful tool I have purchased as a crane operator.

Love - Hate Relationship

Been using it on tree height measurement in the field for about 3 weeks (after spending about a week trying to figure out the poorly written instruction manual). Sometimes it works great. Other times (usually right in front of a customer I’m trying to impress with our high tech equipment), it jumps into another mode, and it takes me about 10 minutes to remember how to get it back where I wanted it. There is a definite learning curve (at least for someone 66 years old), but it seems to be getting better.I almost sent it back in disgust several times, but my ego hates being defeated by an instrument. At $400, I hope I don’t get so ticked off I throw it into a tree instead of re-selling it to someone who is more technically savvy than me. Thanks for letting me vent.

Nifty. Very nifty.

This thing is awesome. It’s great for simple distance measuring, as well as an inclinometer. I use it for measuring tree height in orchards, and for laying out rough pad dimensions in buildings. It’s also great for rough elevations and slope on property if you have a fixed point to reference.

Works great! Saves time and money.

In the solar business I need to measure tree heights on a daily basis. My measurements need to be fast and accurate. A job that used to take me 30min with marginal precision can now be done in 3min with high confidence. Durable and simple design. Works in low light situations. Automatic on/off. Superb battery life. Waterproof. This device paid for itself in the first week. In addition to height, the screen also shows the line of sight distance, as well as the horizontal distance, plus the angle. The laser echo does not work very well in the rain and some of the menu items are hard to remember without the instruction manual. Otherwise, this inclinometer exceeded my expiration.

Solid product

Well made product. Played around with it today and I must say that the menu settings are easy to use; just read the manual first before using the device. I like the fact that you can measure heights (one of the reasons I bought it; the other that is is waterproof). The only drawback is you cannot measure the horizontal distance between two distant points; only the vertical distance (height).

Amazingly Accurate

This unit was priced considerably lower than some other units that we had previously used, so I was more than skeptical of the quality of product we were getting. After spending several hours of performing measurements on known pole heights from known elevations at max range (most were at 950-975’), the measurements by the range finder were always within a foot. Honestly, it’s hard to hold the thing steady enough at max range for this to be an issue, so I’d have to highly recommend this unit.

Only rangefinder that reads in feet.

Works well, the only rangefinder that reads in feet. It is sometimes hard to get a reading at a distance. I am measuring distance between utility poles. If a pole has brush behind it, it is hard to get a reading at 300+ feet. On the whole I like it and would recommend it.

many operations for the money

It is great for what I need. It measures height in .5 ft increments. That is close enough for me. If you need your measurement down to the inch, you will need to spend twice as…

Perfect tool if flying Drones and want to be sure your RTH altitude is set correctly

I use this to check the height of trees and building when flying my Mavic Pro. Works great!

Unbelievably durable and weatherproof!

Great rangefinder! Easy to use and durable as anything! It is connected to my vest all day long and in all kinds of weather and it has held up great.

Too Clever By Half

I think the operating method is the most complicated of any electronics I have ever owned. Trying to cover so many measurements in so many different units with just 1 button (2…

amazing tool. The height function is uncanny accurate.

But for everything else it is perfect.

Use this to measure the height of my drone. Not so accurate because it must be hard to measure something that’s not stationary. But for everything else it is perfect.
