Probably the Best 92” White Pull-Down Screen for Under $200

Over the years, I have acquired three Optoma/Panoview screens, all of them are excellent - including this one. Before buying this screen I bought two cheaper screens from different manufacturers, including one from Elite Screens. I assumed that all white pull-down screens are made fairly equally but I was wrong. The other two screens had horizontally creases in them that made panning scenes painful to watch. This screen, on the other hand, is perfectly smooth - just like the other two Optoma/Panoview screens that I own. The left and right edges bow in a little but they may flatten out over time. Even if they don’t, it doesn’t really matter since it’s just the black borders - the white part of the screen is flat. The overall fit and finish of this screen is superior to other screens also. For example, the brackets used for wall mounting are made of metal instead of plastic like the other two screens I bought. In short, you definitely get what you pay for when buying projection screens. Save yourself the hassle I experienced. Purchase a more expensive, higher quality screen like this one right from the get-go.Other Observations/Notes- Not that it really matters but the screen I received actually looks a little different than the picture. Instead of a Panoview logo on the left side of the casing there is an Optoma logo on the right side. Also the handle is made of white plastic instead of metal. It seems to be just as durable and it looks nicer. The Optoma logo and white plastic handle must be relatively new since my screen was manufactured in late November of 2013.- Yes, it does smell but all projection screens I have used smell at first. It will go away. Also this one is RoHS compliant so, in theory, what you’re smelling isn’t hazardous to your health. This is actually the first screen I’ve owned that has a RoHS sticker or logo on it.- The locking mechanism is nice. Just pull the screen down to where you want it for three seconds and it will stay there. Sometimes it locks exactly where you want it, other times it will lock slightly above or below where you want it. Ultimately, it always locks at least very close to where you want it and it’s much more adjustable than traditional locking mechanisms.- Don’t be too concerned about gain. For me, this screen (1.0 gain) replaces a 1.8 gain screen and honestly I don’t even notice a change in brightness. I do, however, notice better viewing angles and more uniform brightness as expected. Your mileage may vary of course. My theater room is in my basement, and my projector is about 10 feet away from the screen and is rated at 1800 lumens.- If your situation allows for it, definitely go with a white screen with a low gain (1.0-1.3) like this one. You’ll get the best color accuracy, viewing angles, and brightness uniformity that your projector has to offer.

Nice screen - manufacturer needs to fire their shipping dept

From what I can tell, this is a nicely made, high quality screen. It feels sturdy and the smooth retraction mechanism is nice.Unfortunately, I can’t use the screen I received because it got badly dented and bent in transit. It arrived halfheartedly wrapped in some thin cardboard that had completely ripped in several places. There was barely any padding, and no reinforcements along the edges of the box. Apparently Optoma thinks that printing “fragile” on the box will magically protect the screen in transit. If you consider getting one of these, pick them up at a local store and inspect it for damage before schlepping it home.

The Smell Just Doesn’t Go Away!

If you’re okay with living in a nail polish factory, this screen is great; it works like claimed. For me, after several months of daily pulling it down, opening the window, and turning on the fan in order to air it out for a few hours, I give up. It still smells about as bad as when I first got it.
