More counterfeit flash memory from Amazon

Another counterfeit item from Amazon? I have a 50% failure rate on getting items that are obvious fakes. This card was sealed in the cardboard packaging, but cutting it open shows the plastic sleeve holding the card is sealed with a piece of scotch tape. The card itself barely gets 12 the rated rated speed on USB 3.0 ports with the right adapter. Other flash memory works correctly at rated speeds.Be careful and check your memory, commingled inventory means that Amazon can have fakes.READ MORE

Excellent read speeds, write speeds ~28MB/s in the 128GB version.

I tested the 128gb capacity version of the PNY Elite microSDXC card. It provided read speeds above 90MB/s in benchmark tests in several USB 3.0 card readers. Sequential write speed was about 28MB/s. The card is rated UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) so it will maintain at least 10MB/s continuous write for video recording. It doesn’t have U3 so if your device requires that for 4K video you will need a different card.———————————————————————–CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64 © 2007-2013 hiyohiyoCrystal Dew World : (…)———————————————————————–* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s]Sequential Read : 94.799 MB/sSequential Write : 28.068 MB/sRandom Read 512KB : 85.719 MB/sRandom Write 512KB : 11.755 MB/sRandom Read 4KB (QD=1) : 5.328 MB/s [ 1300.8 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 1.151 MB/s [ 281.0 IOPS]Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.919 MB/s [ 1445.0 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 1.209 MB/s [ 295.1 IOPS]Test : 1000 MB M: 0.0% (0.0/119.2 GB)Date : 2016/06/29 13:23:11OS : Windows 8.1 Pro 6.3 Build 9600READ MORE

No re-formatting needed to use this with a 7” Amazon Fire Tablet, it is good to go right away!

I got this (3 of them) to expand the memory on the 7” Fire Tablets I bought my grandkids this past “Prime Day” I really liked that you could just pop them in, I had read that many micro sd cards had to be reformatted to work but not this one, it was good to go right out of the box!READ MORE

Specs good, hopefully performance will match….

Listed specs indicated that this has a “up to 85MB/Sec ” which seems pretty good. Other pricier brand was “up to 90”. Just installed and my Moto Droid Z reported “this SD card seems slow, app performance may be degraded”.Will monitor performance and update this in a week or so…..Usual sealed SD card packaging which had to be basically destroyed to open, so not sure about return options……READ MORE

Works great, the speeds were great

Works great, the speeds were great. I bought this to use with my Odroid XU4 with Android flashed on. Warning, get 32GB or bigger or you will not be able to properly update Android as Android seems to only allocate 116 of the space (so about 1GB) of space available to where the update files get downloaded into. With the update being between 1 to 2GB, it will not work. However, I cannot knock the 16GB uSD from PNY for this. I think I’ll re-purpose it for other SBC such as for the Raspberry Pi.READ MORE

This product works nicely even if Samsung tried so hard not to get it to work.

I ordered this for a Samsung G8. It doesn’t fit in the “proprietary” card device and samsung warns against using a “non samsung card”. BUT, I DID get it to work after some “fiddling”. This product works nicely even if Samsung tried so hard not to get it to work. I would’ve given a five star review, but the maker didn’t specify that Samsung devices would be difficult to just “insert and use”. Although, I suspect the maker might not have known this.READ MORE

Great place to offload less-used documents, music, movies from your SSD

I purchased this in conjunction with a BASEQI aluminum microSD Adapter to expand the storage of my Macbook Pro. It has worked flawlessly. It’s not quite as fast as my SSD, but it’s a perfect repository for documents, music, etc. that frees up space on my primary drive.READ MORE

Questionable origin, good sequential speeds, poor 4k speeds.

This review is for the 200gb PNY Elite MicroSD card, purchased this directly from Amazon (not a third party seller.) The first thing I do when purchasing any flash media these days is test integrity and check for fakes. It’s sad that we can’t purchase even from reputable dealers anymore without expecting a high chance of counterfeit media, but that’s our reality. I’ll include my test results below and let you judge this product for yourself.First test: Ran a Quick Size Test using fakeflashtest. Results were ok, so at least it seems to be the correct capacity. So far so good.Second test: Inspected card info using Chip Genius. No matching records found for the vendor or the part number, which is just slightly suspicious. If it were only the part number I wouldn’t be worried, since it’s possible that the 200gb version is just not in their database yet. It’s unlikely that PNY or its legitimate suppliers would not return a hit though, as they’re definitely not a new or unknown company.Third test: Formatted using a Galaxy S7 (the device intended to be used with it) and ran the app SD Insight. Origin unknown, Manufacturer unknown, OEM/Application ID is Barun Electronics. According to Google, Barun is a semiconductor manufacturer based in Korea. It’s possible that PNY sources their chips from them and doesn’t bother to change the manufacturer ID, but I wasn’t able to find any information that would confirm or deny this. The stamp on the packaging indicates it’s made in Korea, so at least that’s consistent.Fourth test: Popped it back into my computer (plugged directly into a Transcend USB 3.0 card reader in a USB 3.0 port) and ran CrystalDiskMark to test speeds. Sequential write was a solid 30.76 mb/s, but drops sharply after that. Raw results here:———————————————————————–CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64 © 2007-2013 hiyohiyoCrystal Dew World : […]———————————————————————–* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s]Sequential Read : 82.067 MB/sSequential Write : 30.759 MB/sRandom Read 512KB : 72.926 MB/sRandom Write 512KB : 2.646 MB/sRandom Read 4KB (QD=1) : 4.616 MB/s [ 1126.9 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.305 MB/s [ 74.5 IOPS]Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.298 MB/s [ 1293.4 IOPS]Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.086 MB/s [ 20.9 IOPS]Test : 1000 MB G: 0.0% (0.0/183.3 GB)Date : 2016/10/29 23:58:24OS : Windows 8.1 Pro 6.3 Build 9600Great sequential write speeds (although sequential read is just slightly under the advertised rating at 82 rather than 85,) but horrible 4k speeds.Next step will be a thorough test using h2testw, but that will certainly take hours. For now I can only speculate on the questionable origin of this card, but what’s certain is it at least appears to be the correct size, and has very respectable sequential speeds but abysmal speeds at 4k.READ MORE
