Product Reviews

Amazing for everything from a video/file server to a router, or game emulator. Perfect and great price!

The new model (RPi 3) is much faster than its predecessors. Indeed, it’s 10x faster than RPi 1, and double the speed of RPi 2. Now with integrated WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 which deliver flexibility in siting the Raspberry Pi, and make it more attractive as a set-top computer, a video server, game emulator, and infinitely more. This thing screams! The performance is amazing on this tiny thing!I am not commenting on the price by this seller. Yes it’s over MSRP, but that’s the price for getting it overnight vs standing in line and not getting one because it’s sold out. This is just a review of the product itself.—The measurements are identical to the Raspberry Pi 2, which is great since all of your accessories will work perfectly. The RPi 3 includes the same 40-pin GPIO header which allows for extensions into the real world. Blinking lights, motors, talking robots, etc. Same CSI and DSI interfaces to enable camera and display modules.Same as RPi 2, it includes an HDMI out to view on a TV or computer monitor. But it can easily be set up as headless (no display). The 802.11a/g/n is provided by the BCM43438 chip, which also provides Bluetooth 4.1 capability.IMPORTANT! Keep in mind to get things running you’ll three things 1) a microSD card (8GB or larger; class 10) 2) a computer to flash the linux operating system into the microSD 3) a USB keyboard+mouse 4) 2amp micro USB power supply.Performance is killer on this thing. Booting is incredibly fast and I can’t wait to overclock this little desert. It runs at 1.2GHz (64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex A53). It boots faster, it runs faster, it responds faster. With the integrated WiFi + Bluetooth, you no longer need a USB hub for all your devices. A bluetooth keyboard/mouse will not take RPi 3’s precious USB ports. You’ll have them open for any peripheral you wish, hard drives, microphones, printers, etc.Good:PriceQuality of buildEasy of use (assuming you’re techie)WiFi + BLE supportMuch faster processingPrice, again!
The wishful thinking
Wish the micro SD card was spring loadedWish it had more on-board LEDs for debugging.

Buy this and build your dream retrogaming and Kodi machine

I am very inexperienced in building anything with computers, but I decided to forgo the kits and piece together my own Pi. With the help of Google and YouTube I was able to build my Pi exactly the way I wanted and am very happy with the results. I run Retropie Raspbian and Kodi on a triple boot build and can’t be more pleased. I was in the market to buy the mini classic Nintendo to relive some old fun, but wasn’t willing to pay the exorbitant price for minimal use. I wanted to be able to play all the old games and any time I wanted. In addition to this I wanted to get into this Kodi craze and take full advantage of the internet. After some painstaking research I found the solution to all my desires would be a Raspberry Pi. As I said early, I decided to build it myself and it came with it’s challenges, but I did succeed in the end. The onboard Wifi works very well and the processing speed meets all my needs without overheating. I did buy a case with heatsinks, so this may have helped. One thing I would recommend is not buying the preloaded NOOBS micro SD card. It is a waste of money since you can just download NOOBS to your own card.

Great device, a lot of documentation online, no hardware x265 support

I triple boot Kodi, Raspbian and Retropie on the Raspberry Pi 3B, but mainly use it for Kodi. I share video files over the home network and it can handle 720 or 1080 (x264) without any hiccups. With the last Openelec/Libreelec versions it can play x265 720p, too, but I wouldn’t count on it to do it every time, to be honest, since it can get a little hot without extra thermal cooling (I use a regular plastic case for it and nothing else). When it gets hot, it does not shut down, but it throttles the processor and sometimes you can notice it.Keep in mind that to use it you need a micro SD card, an adapter, and an HDMI cable. A wireless or usb keyboard is highly recommended for setup, too.Overall, it’s a great device, but if your primary use is Kodi, I would suggest looking at some other devices that have hardware support for the x265 codec.

Fabulous… but there are risks.

Didn’t come with micro flash. Great for applications that need fewer I/O pins and more USB ports. Beaglebone has more I/O pins, fewer USB ports and comes with on-bard flash for a similar price. Opted for Debian Linux.SECURITY ALERT!!! The root account is unprotected by default. Password protect root, or disable root login after creating user account(s) and setting up sudo. Make sure it’s hack-proof especially if putting it directly on the internet. You don’t want it to become part of some zombie network.

Great idea that keeps getting better

This is my third pi, having got the first generation, the second and now the third. They just keep getting better and more powerful. It is amazing what they pack into this little miracle. I keep thinking of new things I can do with it. The compact size and now, with more features added to the board and not requiring the use of the usb ports, makes it even more versatile.

Awesome for retro gaming!

I’ve purchased several of these Raspberry Pi units for different projects around the house. We have one in the living room for our retro gaming sessions, one in my son’s room for his Kano computing and another as a mini media box in the bedroom. The Wi-Fi works great and having Bluetooth is essential for being lazy and wireless control. Planning on purchasing another to get started on learning coding.

Great device

Its great, when I received first time, I just inserted an old raspbian version SD card and it not worked just give colored screen, later I discovered it may needs a newer version of Raspbian, so I downloaded that file from raspberrypi.org and open it by 7zip (not by regular zip because it will not work) in the end the Raspberry Pi was working great and I put my wireless sensors and worked perfectly.About packaging, shipping I think they are very good.

Five Stars

Great product, good packaging and robust for some simple fun projects.

Not a daily desktop

Works great as a lot of things. Mainly development board type stuff and as a media center. Not powerful enough to be a daily desktop though…

Love it!

Received what I expected

… you need the NOOBS sd card to operate this amazing computer, it does nothing without it and it …

Misleading advertising you need the NOOBS sd card to operate this amazing computer, it does nothing without it and it should say so in the advertising.

Love it!

Neat little board

Neat little item. Works perfectly and alot of compatible software.

Five Stars

Excellent product for robotics. I have purchased about 10 raspis.

This is a great product at a reasonable price

I had no problem with getting it running and has performed splendidly. This is a great product at a reasonable price.

Love the pi 3

Love the pi 3. Installed the non-gui version of the raspberry pi debian version. Have the full benefits of a server with minuscule power use. Using it for Home Assistant.
