Finally Connected! :)

I loved this Wi-Fi Blu-ray Player at first.. The price was great and right out of the box, I did the software upgrade like it asked and it connected to our network with no problem. I was able to get on Netflix and YouTube with no problem. Went to bed that night and shut it off. About a week later, I turned it back on and was trying to get onto Netflix again but for some reason, it lost network connection. I spent about 2 hours trying to get it connected back with our network but had no success. I did everything from doing a manual set up and entered in our network SSID and password, resetting the device to factory settings, turning off our router, unplugging it for a minute, etc., so finally, thinking it might be a defective one, I got fed up and requested to send it back and replace it with a new one. Amazon was good about sending out another quickly and we received it yesterday (6/4/15). Took this one out of the box and switched it out with the 1st one. Started off great, did the software upgrade and it found our network with no problem. Was able to get on Netflix and YouTube just like last time. Turned it on again today (6/5/15) and now it can’t find our network again! In fact, it can’t find ANY networks. I’m done with this model now. I requested to get a refund and I am just going to look around for another brand. The reason we went with a SONY is because we have a 2013 model that works great so we figured this would work even better. Too bad both of them were a disappointment. Attached is a photo of the network set up screen and where it says “Network (SSID)” is where it’s supposed to have a list of all the networks but doesn’t.UPDATE 6/8/15 - So I was getting ready to put the first player I received back in the box to send it back to Amazon but I wanted to try one more attempt at getting this to connect back to our network bc I was really irritated at myself that I could not get it to work, so instead of hooking it back up on the TV I had it on, I brought it upstairs to our master bedroom TV, unplugged our 2013 model and hooked up the 3500. Same as usual.. started off good and connected to our network with no issues; got on Netflix & YouTube just like before and a few minutes later, I shut the power off (this is where the problem always started with connecting back to our network). Sure enough, lost connection again to where it’s not picking up any networks at all. So then, I got the idea to unplug the player from the outlet and then plug it back in. Didn’t think that would do anything but it did! All of a sudden, it picks up all of the local networks again and it connects back to ours with no problem. I than run downstairs and do the same thing to the replacement and it starts working again as well! I am still baffled as to what could of caused both of them to have the same issue and to correct it, something so simple as to unplug it and plug it back in would actually solve the problem. I don’t know if that was just a coincidence or if that was the actual solution but hopefully for some of the other people having the same problem, maybe give that a try and see if it works. I changed my review from 1 to 4 stars. Would have given it 5 stars but that was a lot of aggravation to deal with. I’m just glad everything is working now and since I was able to get them working, I’ve decided to keep both of them. Hopefully everything continues to keep working the way they should. :)

Far from my Sony expectations

I’ve been a Sony fan for 30 years. I have to believe this unit is not designed and/or built by Sony but carries the brand name under a license or something. This is the sad state of globalized products today - you can’t trust the brand by reputation any longer. The unit has a minimal interface - one LED and two buttons. It has no manual “eject darnit” override and you have no idea what the status is if the video out is off and no direct control if you suspect something wrong with the remote.The player ate a DVD and fell into a parental control mode forbidding me to eject the disk and failed to allow me to override the parental control. Eventually after several power cycles and resets I was able to coax the disk out, but afterwards it has been unable to update its software despite a wired network connection. (The network works, but the update turns off the player and reports failure some time later if I turn it on to check.) There is no feedback on progress or why the failure and the recommendation to use USB is no help, as the Sony site does not provide such updates.I will update this if Sony customer support comes through, but I have to strongly urge staying away from this model. The other two blu-ray players in my house are also Sony and have always worked flawlessly. I’d hoped to keep things simple by having similar remotes and controls, but - no luck.

I Should Have Paid Attention to All Those Negative Reviews about Wifi Connectivity

I’m a fan of Sony televisions, so after reading lots of negative reviews of this Blue Ray player, I decided to ignore their warnings about wifi connectivity issues based on several positive (if snarky) reviews. Those said all you had to do was read the directions, update the player’s software as soon as it connects to the internet and all will be fine. Well, not true. Not only did I update the player software, but I first updated the firmware for my wifi network (Apple AirPort; Sony recommends this firmware upgrading). I put the player directly in front of my new (2015 model) Sony Bravia TV – when I installed the TV several months ago, it quickly connected to my wifi network and has remained flawlessly connected since then. The player, enjoying the same maximum strength wifi signal as the Bravia TV, initially could only stay connected for several minutes at a time. So I restarted the network and the player, connected it again and ran the player’s network diagnostic: it confirmed the network connection with a maximum strength wifi signal. As a test, I registered it with my Amazon Prime video account and began streaming one of Amazon’s original TV shows: the player maintained its connection to the network for a bit more than 90 minutes and then lost the connection. I went through all the connection business and tried again: this time the player stayed connected for about 40 minutes before dropping its wifi connection. So smart me decided that I’d just use the player for discs. Ha! Turns out at least with this blu ray player, it will not play a disc unless it’s connected to the wifi network. Why that wifi connection is necessary for disc playback is a question way above my pay grade since the player is required to be wired directly to the TV through an HDMI cable. With the player connected to the network, I started a new DVD of a feature film which looked great – for about 10 minutes when the player lost its wifi connection and stopped the disc. When this happens, you can’t eject the disc until you reconnect the player to the network. So why does my same year’s (2015) Sony Bravia TV always maintain its wifi network connection while this player in the identical location can’t? My hunch – separate from a probable software glitch – is that this player is stuffed into a very small box (a nice design feature), about half the size of some other blu ray players and it may be that this size issue negatively affects its ability to establish a stable wifi connection.

A great inexpensive choice

Far quieter than the Walmart version I bought earlier. Works pretty well just takes time to load the internet content.

OK player, but firmware update issues make it a failed product

This is a decent-enough Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi connectivity. I found it a bit slow to boot up, but otherwise worked fine.

This player sucks

This thing is a piece of crap. It always freezes up and I have to literally unplug it all the time. The wifi on it sucks as well not enough bandwidth.

Good product for price

Has some issues with freezing up and volume (strangely enough) and may not be compatible with all streaming services, but overall a good product for the price.
