This is my fourth Sony product after my purchase of Sony a7s, RX100, and RX100III (wife’s cam). I currently also have the Lumix GH4 as I like to take videos as much as photos. I bought the HX80 as a gift for my niece. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn’t quite need the prosumer 1” sensor point and shoot or who wants the extra zoom capabilities that the larger sensors can’t pack in such a small form. I will work backwards and start with the cons then the pros.Cons:* Smaller 1⁄2.3 sensor as opposed to 1” sensor (then again price is reflective of smaller sensor and the 1⁄2.3 sensor on the HX80 is back illuminated which makes it much nicer than other comparable sensors)* No 4k video* No manual zoom* No touchscreenPros:* Pop up viewfinder* Flash that’s semi-tiltable* Quick menu with 12 customizable functions* Full PASM modes for manual and semi-manual controls plus full auto modes if that’s the preference* Monitor that tilts 180 degrees for selfies* 30X zoom fantastic for travelers* High quality XAVC S video format up to 50mbps at 24p, 30p, and 60p (requires SDXC memory cards)* PASM modes all available for video* Video manual mode has auto-iso option (not all cameras allow video auto-iso in manual; i.e. the much more expensive RX100 doesn’t have this option)* 5-AXIS image stabilizer works great* WIFI/NFC included plus downloadable appsThere are many more features that I could go on about this neat little point and shoot, just check out the spec sheets. At this price level, especially for those that like to shoot both photos and videos, the Sony HX80 in my opinion is one of the best 1⁄2.3 sensor pocket cameras. I hope you find this review helpful!
Love this little camera. I have DSLR cameras - and I wanted a tiny camera to complement such - i.e. when out shooting nature with a DSLR and long lens - I would also like to have a little pocket camera to capture the near scene and scenery. This HX80 fits in the pocket of your trousers with a 30x zoom and a view-finder - and can take amazing shots. With the tiny small sensor in the HX80 - will photos be as clear as a DSLR with a $2000 lens? No. Of course not. But this camera for what is does - is genius. The electronic viewfinder is critical for the images that I will attach here.I was out bird watching with my SWAROVSKI binos - and spotted this iguana (St. Maarten) sunning itself on a dead snag far in the distance. Decided to try out my new HX80 to see what the zoom could do. Zoom is really good - but it would be worthless in this case without a view finder. See attached hand-held images for wide angle - and the 30x zoom on the iguana. The red arrow in the wide angle shows where the iguana is sunning itself.Highly recommend as a nice pocket point and shoot.
I mostly use Canon Digital SLR cameras, but I needed a small camera for a trip abroad. I particularly like the active viewfinder. It works great in very bright sunlight. So far the camera has met my expectations.
After 6 months I got the dread E:91:01 error message and the flash no longer works. The camera still takes pictures, but no flash capability and the aggravating error message in the middle of the viewfinder/screen. I then discovered this is extremely common for Sony cameras from the highest end to the cheapest. Googling eventually got me to two conclusions….1) sometimes it’s a firmware problem and it’s an expensive fix, about the cost of the camera and….2) Sometimes it’s a software problem.Either way, it’s got to be sent in and it’s sucks. Google Sony camera E:91:01 error message, read it, and weep. I would never buy another Sony camera. All the other negative reviews are kind of wanky…the camera takes great pictures for the price point, it’s small and if people don’t like small buttons don’t buy a small camera, etc., etc. What really sucks is when a new camera clearly has major internal software and hardware problems, as one finds out if they google the error message. It’s rampant. Don’t buy this camera.
Used it for about 1.5 year. Move over with it many travels including hiking in desert , forests , night campings, several times fell down it , I cant belive its surviving all that and still prefectly functional .. :)So compact , light weight and so powerfull , just best for trips , long hiking or where ever you canthoul big heavy cameras with set of lenses.Like its:Ability to take 2 pictures automatically regular and HDR so one of 2 always good when bad conditionOptical zoom 30 is very useful, Id be like more ..Not bad at low light conditionsMany other features.Durability, Strength.
Love love love this camera! I have a larger SONY (A6000) but enjoy the point and shoot of this one. Albeit a very nice point & shoot this camera is LOADED with capabilities and features. I love the pop up viewer, especially when the glare is high on the screen. GREAT purchase!
We like it because it fits that middle ground between a mobile phone camera (which is terrible in certain conditions) and a large Digital SLR, which can be too bulky and cumbersome to lug around, and it takes very good pictures with many features for such a small handheld camera.
A excellent travel camera that will fit in your shirt or pants pocket and takes amazing pics. I bought this camera for our trip out west and was very pleased with the images. Below are my pics from the Valley of Fire & Joshua Tree National Park, You will not be disappointed with this purchase.
On the product description it list that there is an app available for time-lapse mode. When I received the camera and attempted to download time-lapse feature from flimsy Play…
AMAZING - Put the camera on the roof of my car. Forgot it. It fell off while driving. A few bumps and scratches but that’s it. Still takes A-1 photos. Kudos to Sony.
highly recommended. Satisfied The line is coming soon! I need it . Recommend to my friend These did not work for me, but the seller worked very much on the refund.
The only thing I don’t like about this camera is that you have to remember to physically pop up the flash.
This was my very first vlogging camera. This camera offers soo many features for the price. Pop up view finder, pop up flash, descent audio, and 1080p video.
For the price, you can’t ask for more. On auto mode it shoots beautiful pictures and I’m able to switch to video.
Included with the camera is a rechargeable battery, AC adapter, micro USB cable, instruction manual and wrist strap.
Honestly, I like this product but the only downfall is that it does not take good pictures in the dark.
Great point and shoot! Good price for the product.
