Product Reviews

Great form factor, plays very well with Sony HDTVs but unfortunately it doesn’t sound great. Bought the Sony HTNT5 instead.

Ended up returning this for Sony’s top-tier model, Sony HTNT5 Sound Bar with Hi-Res Audio and Wireless Streaming, it does everything the HTCT790 does and it sounds amazing.I originally bought this to replace an aging Yamaha sound bar. My old sound bar sounded good but after buying a new Sony HDTV I wanted something:1) SlimMy previous soundbar was tall and used to hide the bottom part of the screen. This sound bar is slim and doesn’t suffer the same problem. In fact, this is as slim as it gets.2) Plays nice with the TVMy old soundbar, like most, was connected by toslink (optical cable). I had to juggle between remotes, one to control the TV, one to control the volume / settings.I got tired of that and opted for this Sony soundbar which supports Bravia Sync (HDMI CEC). Now whenever I turn the TV on the sound bar starts automatically. Turning off the entire system is just a matter of pressing the on/off button of the TV remote. This, by the way, works with other bravia sync enabled products, such as the PS4. Turning on the PS4 controller turns on the PS4, which in turns powers on the TV, soundbar and subwoofer.Extremely convenient. The volume can also be controlled with the TV remote.I barely use the soundbar remote - only to tweak settings from time to time. And this is not even required, the soundbar settings are also available through the Bravia Sync menu of the TV.4) ConnectedI wanted a bluetooth sound bar to play music from my phone. The HTCT790 has that and much more. It supports Google Cast and Spotify out of the box which I like a lot. The quality of direct streaming from Spotify rather than bluetooth is noticeable and it doesn’t drain my phone battery.3) Sounded better than my old sound barAnd this is where the HTCT790 fell short. My ~$200, 3 years old sound bar actually sounded better than this one.I really wanted to love this product but the main goal of a sound bar is to, well, deliver sound.I ended up returning this and ordering the higher end version of this one, the HTNT5: Sony HTNT5 Sound Bar with Hi-Res Audio and Wireless StreamingIt’s everything this sound bar is but it sounds great. It’s the same software, almost same form factor but instead of using 2 full range drivers, ht HTNT5 has 2 mid-range drivers, 2 tweeters and 2 super-tweeters and they do make a difference.

I like the voice+ option which enhances dialogue

I am not an audiophile. I just wanted a sound bar that would play 4k audio and works seamlessly with my sony 4k tv. set up was very simple. No issues with the sub connectivity with the actual sound bar itself-that wireless aspect is a huge plus. I haven’t messed with any audio settings, just have it set on default. I had an old sony sound bar that was not wireless and this new set up makes life a tad bit easier. I like the voice+ option which enhances dialogue, that was a problem with my old sound bar, the background audio sometimes masked the voice of the actors. I haven’t tried setting up any other bluetooth peripherals with the sound bar itself but I don’t anticipate it being an issue. Overall to a novice ear, I couldn’t be happier with my set up.

I love Sony but this product left me wanting

I love Sony but this product left me wanting. Sent it back because the bass speaker could hardly be heard even all the way up. Spent the same amount on the Bose CineMate 15……..WOW!!!! No comparison. I`m still convinced the bass speaker may have been defective so it may have been awesome otherwise. Still a fan of Sony and Bose.

DO NOT BUY THIS OR KEEP THE BOX IF DO…FRUSTRATED!!!!

UPDATE 15SEP2017:DON”T THROW AWAY THE BOX….because you will be returning to Sony for “repair”. This is now my third time returning to them. Last time they sent me a new unit, and now this one has the same problem. Again, keep the box, and if you’re within your refund period, send back to Amazon.==================================Gonna keep this short and sweet. Do not buy this unless you like unhooking all your equipment and mailing it back to United Radio (Sony’s warranty contract) for repair (and that’s if still under warranty). It’s the dread “PLEASE WAIT” menu/display screen that if you google for this product, you will find countless complaints about this.I’m on my second send off as of today. Of course I’m past my time to return for a refund (purchased in November 2016), but I’m also past my time of sending this thing back. It seems like Sony should bite the bullet on this and do some type of “make it right” gesture, but we know that will not likely happen.Overall, when it works, it has amazing sound, the 4K pass through, and etc. I actually love the unit…again, when it works.

Small home theater

I didn’t want a big intrusive setup so this soundbar is perfect for me. HDMI switch built in, google cast/Bluetooth for music, 2.1 sound and more if desired. The bass works fine for me every time. No need to do any additional setup. It wanted one update and did so without issue. I also like that if my PS4 times out it automatically powers down and conserves energy.I haven’t had a problem with sound from movies, TV shows, video games, and music apps. I’m no audiophile or snob though.I wish it were a few inches shorter in length and that’s about it.

Would not buy again.

It’s a decent soundbar, it has a terrible time pairing with my Sony television. I literally have to reset my television and soundbar everyday, so that the soundbar can pair up.

AMAZING I hope the neighbor next door doesn’t complain

AMAZING I hope the neighbor next door doesn’t complain. Crispy clear audio and bass, WHAT A BASS. 4K Netflix on it is very cool. Several connections help a lot.

Sound was excellent, but unfortunately only worked for 2 weeks. Returned.

Stopped Working

Four Stars

Sony’s a very nice product and the sound is great, thanks for the good buy

While Sony is typically top notch this model has a bug in it, I am in the process of sending my second back.

Five Stars

A month in use (with a Sony Bravia 4K TV) no issues or problems at all.

Piece of cr**.

WorkeD from March till august. Now works sporadically. Can’t get to home menu to access setup to check firmware and try a reset . Probably out of warranty now.

3 trips to repair and 2 replacments in 8 months!

3 trips back for repair in the first 8 months! So far, my sound bar has been back for repair 3 times. The first time, there we no parts and a new sound bar was sent to me.

Good for the money

Bought it when upgraded to 4k tv

Amazing sound bar

Amazing sound bar. I compared it to the current HT CT800 and the only difference is the model year really, 2016 vs 2017 for the 800.

Works well…until IT DOESN’T…AT ALL!!

This was a Christmas gift in 2016. It has not been 6 months since purchased and installed. Out of nowhere, it stopped working.

Seems OK

Sound quality is OK, not overly impressive. One point of annoyance, when placed in front of a 48” Sony Flatscreen this sound bar interferes with the TV’s IF.

This sound bar is a great upgrade to any TV

This sound bar is a great upgrade to any TV. This system will not blow your mind, however it does sound very crisp with balanced bass.
