Product Reviews

“Pound for pound”, this is the BEST mobile DAP to date

My “direct-to-the-point”, concise review:1. Great tonal balance- Sound reproduction is very natural and spectacular, from across the entire frequency spectrum.2. Great dynamics when used with in-ear monitors- I am using Hifiman RE600, Senn IE800, Dunu DN200 whenever I am mobile. And with Hifiman RE600, this IEM practically changed its sound from warm-midcentric to a powerful sound similar to Shure SE846 if used with the NW-ZX1003. Unbelievable soundstage- You don’t need to “wince”, concentrate, and listen closely just to hear the details and instrument separation. With the NW-ZX100, just relax and enjoy the music, as the details are easily discernible. This is effortless listening at its best from a mobile DAP!4. Intuitive Controls; best for the walking- You can control the buttons while this unit is in your pocket since it doesn’t use softkeys like the NW-ZX2- wherein you need to get the NW-ZX2 unit out of your pocket everytime you need to shuffle or change songs5. Long battery life- Based on my usage, my NW-ZX100 lasts more than 60+hours, without using the built-in sound augmentation from Sony like Clear Audio + (which I hate using)When compared to my previous favorite DAP (Fiio X5 ii), the NW-ZX100 is definitely a major step-up, in terms of soundstage, instrument separation, tonal balance, detail retrieval, and sound reproduction. And when compared to NW-ZX2 (auditioned this unit side by side with the NW-ZX100), the slight difference would only be the soundstage, wherein ZX2 is better in some recordings. But everything is almost pretty the same, especially the sound signature.Highly recommended!

Outstanding Audio Fidelity from a Mobile Device - A+++

PROS1. Exceptional audio fidelity> You can hear the difference wired or wireless (iPhone 6S used for comparison with High Resolution Music Player)> Adjustable Bluetooth connection settings allows the highest quality sound over BT driven by your listening devices Bluetooth profile support> Tested using music encoded in MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, and DSD with playback using MDR-1RBT, MDR-1ADAC, and in-car using BMW i Drive> For lossy MP3 and AAC audio, the DSEE HX makes a noticeable improvement in higher frequencies2. Build Quality is excellent> Feels solid and looks great3. Battery life is outstanding> A weeks listening without recharge is easily achieved (4 hrs/day)4. Tremendous Storage Capacity> 128GB internal> 128GB Micro SDXC> Fast transfer5. Media Go application facilitates straightforward management of your music library from multiple sources (Windows OS only)> Finds music in your local iTunes library as well as in network locations if you provide the path> Tracks which files have been synced so you can always tell what’s not on your deviceCONS1. Proprietary connector requires Walkman cable in order to charge and transfer files2. Screen looks good but viewing angle will affect readability3. Dynamic Normalizer did not seem to balance recorded audio levels from recording to recording4. Would like to see a case and screen protector included. I don’t believe drops would be very kind to the pretty metal enclosureSummaryThis is an excellent portable audio device delivering top-notch audio quality from digital source recordings both CD quality and/or hi-resolution digital source recordings. When listening thru the headphone connection using the MDR-1ADAC, I notice a bit less sound amplification. I’m assuming this is driven by the impedance of the headset when using the analog cable. There is no problem, however, adjusting the volume to a suitable level. The bottom line is the NW-ZX100 delivers a very high level of audio fidelity. Whether this is worth the price of entry is obviously subjective. Just understand that you are definitely getting what you are paying for with few compromises here.

It’s built much better than the NW-A20 series Walkman, and has a more accurate sound.

It’s built better than the NW-A20 series Walkman, and has a more accurate sound. The highs are clear and wide and not compressed into the slightly fatiguing harshness as with the NW-A20. There’s less bass than the A20, but it’s more accurate. (And if you want bass you should be buying bassy headphones, not a bassy player.) For a portable player with a fantastic UI, 128GB storage and ridiculously long battery life, it’s a pretty great all-in-one package.Ordered a glass screen protector because the screen is plastic as far as I can tell. A glass protector also makes the back/option buttons flush with the display, which feels more premium; has a better fit and finish. The official leather flip case is also spectacular. Slightly overpriced, but very well made and perfectly fitted. Is the ZX100 worth the $600-$700 it usually goes for? No. $500? Maybe. If you can find it for $400 or less and are looking for a great portable music player, then absolutely get this one. That’s 128GB iPod touch pricing-territory and this sounds a thousand times better.

Worth Every Penny

Upgraded from a DX-90. The 128 GB onboard storage is great, and the library builds extremely fast- I have a 200gb card + the 128 on board, and it scans it in just a minute or two as compared with 10 min or so with the DX90…HUGE + for the ZX100. SQ is top notch. The UI is really great and simple. I love the lack of touch screen…I hated accidentally selecting things on my DX90, which made it very frustrating to use. Buttons give a solid click.Battery life is almost unbelievable. 40+ hours playing FLAC easy. It’s hard to believe after 6 hours or so with the DX90.Picture added to show a 200gb Sandisk card working properly.

I wanted a music player and once I got use to how to use it, I LOVE IT. Great sound and well made as only Sony Can.

Music player only but wow it is good.

I purchased this unit at another well-known web site for $399. At the time, Amazon was selling this unit for $699 and lo and behold, not long afterward Amazon matched the price.
