Product Reviews

I own this receiver and it sounds amazing and with a 5 year warranty it is built …

If you want to buy the Sony model that is loaded with the bells and whistles, then get the much cheaper DN1040 at $599 with Wifi - Bluetooth - AirPlay. Or, you can throw out all the features add an extra $1000 to get this ES model. With the ES, you are paying for it NOT to be cluttered up with gadgets, you are paying for what is on the inside. I own this receiver and it sounds amazing and with a 5 year warranty it is built to last. But features? Not in this unit…… Also, if you are wanting to get this receiver, shop around, I paid HALF of what this site’s price is asking. I did a TON of auditioning for months and I would compare this to the Marantz SR7008. Both have an MSRP of $1699 but can be bought for much less with some research. The Marantz has more features but it has Audyssey which I HATE. Also the Marantz is not fully 4K compliant so it’s not 4K future proof! The Sony mic calibration is easy and does a wonderful job. And it’s easy to manual adjust the results to your liking. Sounds amazing, better than the Marantz did. No I don’t think it’s worth $1699 but it’s worth more than what I paid. I don’t know if I’m allowed to list what I paid so I’ll spell out the first number of what I paid. S-E-V-E-N and for that I’ll give it 5 stars.

Weak amplifier section, no network features

Got this from a local dealer.Pros:Sound quality for music playback is excellent.Built in Ethernet hub is a great idea and useful if you have several network boxes - I have Apple TV, HTPC, and a PS3 hooked up to it.Has both HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 so this is one of the very few receivers right now that should be 4K future proof.Pretty much everything else touted as 4K compliant does NOT have HDCP 2.2 so it will most likely not work with 4K content when it finally shows up.ConsIt’s pretty barebones for the price. No network features. Few surround modes.Amplifier section is weak - have to crank it all the way up to drive the speakers at a reasonable volume. I am coming from Marantz 7005 which seemed much more powerful - however I like the sound of the Sony more, I think it has more detail and for my room I actually prefer the results produced by Sony’s calibration sofware as opposed to Audyssey in the Marantz.Overall I think it is a good improvement over the Marantz but have to knock off one star for weak amp (definitely try it with your speakers, I am not sure this will drive 4 ohm speakers very well) - however I love the sound quality and it’s good to have guaranteed 4K compatibiliy - once again, almost no receiver right now has both HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2Edit:After some experimentation, it appears that there are two ways to display volume - in dB and also in arbitraty 0-100 numbers. When I changed display scale from dB to 0-100 I found that turning the dial even halfway provides more than enough power so my impressions about weak amplifier section were erroneous. As such upgraded from 4 to 5 stars.

ES really is worth it for the sound quality

Ok, have had this for a week so far and I love it. Sound quality is amazing, even with my old Infinity speakers. I swapped my three year old nicely mid-level Yamaha for it and have been amazed. The sound is so much better, the surround and movie and music quality all so much superior. I had thought I needed new speakers before I put this receiver in, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I guess that’s what the extra cost for the ES line is all about.I admit, I miss the dozen or so different types of surround and decoding I could select on my Yamaha, or no doubt on a cheaper non-ES Sony, but as I now realize, I was switching between those different modes because none of them really sounded that good. This one as like three modes, Neo:6, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby DTS. That’s pretty much it, but they all sound great. Also has a Pure Direct that supposedly plays the music exactly as the artist intended it, still playing with that one. Even music over the radio/tuner is amazing. Is it work the extra $1200 or so off the list? Maybe, but you should be able to get one for much less than the retail price with a bit of shopping, and that is definitely worth it. Do I wish it had built in Bluetooth, internet radio, etc.? Sure, but I’d rather have better sound, and this one is it with such simple set up (two minutes with the included mic to automatically calibrate).Oh, and upgrade the firmware when you get yours, pretty painless but you do need a USB key. Now if only Sony includes a Dolby Atmos in the next firmware upgrade, that would be perfect…

love it but…

I did like the reciever but I am not giving it a 5 star because it does not have wifi eventhough its an ES, everything else is awesome.

Good One !!!

I am an Electrical Engineer and i have analyzed the distortions of the system and am concluding that you should buy it !!!

Vastly improved as compared to older ES generations

This is my 4th Sony Home Theater controller/amp/receiver (3rd ES). I’ve also had second systems centered around a Yamaha, a Pioneer, a Kenwood, and a non ES SONY spanning ~30…

Five Stars

sounds pretty darn good for a receivereasy to set up

Three Stars

wow!! no phono inpu, t for such an expensive unit and limited aux audio inputs, really

Disappointed

Disappointing. This model has no blue tooth support, no DLNA support, no streaming music or video, nada, even through it has a network connection and built in Ethernet hub, go…

HDMI 2.0 & HDCP 2.2 Is a must for 4k

If your goal is to feed a 4k source through your AVR, you’ll need a hdmi 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliant receiver.
