Unbelievable!

I picked up my 55” on Easter Monday 2017 from BB and have been testing it all week. To be honest, I’ve never seen anything like it!Let’s start with the design even though it’s subjective. The A1E has very minimalistic design. It seems Sony looked to a Bauhaus design credo when designing the set i.e. “form follows function”. Sony obviously wants you to focus on the picture and the picture only. That’s why there is virtually no bezel. In fact there is virtually no bulk to the TV. The TV disappears behind the screen. The stand is very well designed, heavy and solidly built. You will never feel like the TV is going to tip over. The connections are thoughtfully designed and cable management is fantastic with clips that keep cables together just below where they connect to the TV on the rear stand. The angle on the screen is so minimal that I barely noticed. As far as picture quality is concerned, it’s the best I’ve seen since the days of the Pioneer Kuro plasma’s. This TV has picture quality that rivals and in some cases surpasses those Plasma’s. The motion processing of the TV and it’s 4k upscale capability far surpasses any LG OLED I have ever scene. HD sources are beautifully upscaled but I would say that one definitely needs to calibrate the TV in order to get the best out of it. I also have a 4K PVR at home and Broadcast 4K looks phenomenal, especially sports. Netflix 4k UHD and Amazon Prime 4k UHD also look amazing. I tested “The Grand Tour” on Amazon Prime, the episode where they are in dune buggies in Namibia and it felt like I was there. I also tested out an Alien Bluray 4k transfer which is probably one of the best contrast torture tests you can give a TV. All I can say is it was phenomenal. As far as sound is concerned the TV has fantastic sound out of the box. While I use a Sonos Playbar setup, I did still test the sound out the speakers of the TV initially. I was shocked. The soundstage from the acoustic surface speakers is surprisingly large. Secondly it actually feels like noise is coming out of the characters mouths on this TV instead of from a speaker below. So all in all I would say that Sony has hit it out of the park for their first OLED. I am ecstatic. This is my first jump into 4K and into OLED and I won’t be looking back. No regrets at spending the money.

Great Picture Processing

I first got into the OLED game last year with an LG set. I’ve been sticking to my old plasmas for so long because LCD panels just didn’t appeal to me. They were lighter and brighter than my plasma but had too many problems with blooming, light bleed, picture processing/pixelation, bad viewing angles, etc. When OLED first came out I was drooling to pick one up but wanted to give them a few years to work out their kinks. So when I purchased my LG B6 for the bedroom I was nothing but happy.I liked the set so much that I wanted to replace the plasma in my living room with another OLED. I was going to get another LG but Sony has a good reputation and figured I’d give them a shot. I really wanted to hold of for the Panasonic OLED later this year but I’m too impatient haha. I’m a bit biased towards Pnasonic as all of plasmas lasted over 10 years and still look good.So I bit the bullet and went with this model. It’s definitely a little brighter than my LG which is great because my living room gets tons of sunlight. It also makes HDR content “pop” a bit more (I currently play 4K HDR games on the PS4, 4K content from Netflix and Amazon, as well as 720p/1080p content from DirecTV). It’s not jaw droppingly brighter than LG, and varies depending on content, but the contrast ratio look a bit better on the Sony. I think a lot of this has to do with Sonys picture processing engine which is without a doubt a step up from LG (After all, this panel is made by LG). Another variable in brightness level is the picture mode you use. I’m currently using Cinema Pro mode with minor adjustments even though Vivid mode is brighter. I just hate how both LG and Sony have that Automatic Brightness Limiter. In my opinion it just holds both sets back from their true potential. It’s really cool that the speakers are housed in the stand behind the TV to make it appear the screen has virtually no bezel. I was expecting the sound to appear muffled but that’s not the case. Dialog sounds crisp and clean. I added a soundbar and subwoofer which of course gives it more “oomph” but the default speakers aren’t bad at all. The stand is solid, just make sure you have a wide enough surface. I have mine mounted on the wall anyway. One downside to having it wall mounted is that the inputs are a pain to reach, so my advice is plug in all your HDMI cables before mounting. In the end I’m really happy with my purchase. Honestly, I do have a little buyers remorse only because of the price. This set was literally twice the price of my B6. While the overall picture is a bit brighter, and the picture processing a bit better, it’s hard to justify paying double. But I guess that true with any tech–you pay out the nose as an early adopter. This set will probably be around $1500 come Black Friday/NFL Super Bowl time.So if your looking to save some cash you can opt for the 55” LG B6 where still in stock for $1500 or pony up $3000 for the Sony which has the best picture on the market IMO. And again, the LG has a fantastic picture too, especially if most of your viewing is in a darkened room which mine is. Whichever way you go I think you’ll be happy with any of the current OLED offerings. Once Panasonic releases their OLED in the US later this year I’ll be putting that in the basement family room! I’m just so happy that there’s finally a good alternative to plasma.

If looking at the 77”, save your money and get the 75” X940e. Better use of money.

For those of you looking at the 77”, save your money and get the 75” X940e. Better performance and you can use the left over money to buy an ultra quality surround sound…

Like a window into entertainment

This oled is amazing! It’s like looking through a window. I have yet to find one flaw or something that I dislike about it.

Better than a movie theater.

Got our 55 Inch Sony 4K HD OLED about two months ago - replaced a Samsung 55 inch 4K LED tv after two board failures.

Very good almost great!

I’ve had my sony 65in oled for a month and it’s the best television that I’ve owned. I only wish the remote was backlit because It sucks having to fiddle around with the buttons…

Hands down, AMAZING.

This TV is RIDICULOUS. I had a Panasonic VT-30 Plasma for about 10 years and I was not looking forward to losing what a plasma tv can provide, especially in black levels.

Best picture in the world

I have never seen picture this good on any TV. The smart functions are great and its awesome not having to have a separate set top box installed.

Best tv on the market.

The picture quality is insanely sharp giving you much realism out of your picture. Dual database processing cleaning up noise while keeping your image sharp as possible.
