transfer rate of up to 480MB per second (depending on card capacity)
Transcend¿s Multi-Card Reader M5 offers a slot for almost every memory card currently on the market and allow fast, easy transfer of music, videos, photos or documents through its high-speed USB 2.0 interface. Unlike other, more confusing card readers, all five of the M5¿s card slots are clearly labeled on the top of the reader AND in your computer browser next to the drive letter to avoid confusion and save time (software download required). Currently available in either hot pink or ivory, the M5 is the perfect companion for all your memory cards.
There is an old saying among engineers and designers:“CHEAP, FAST, GOOD - pick any two”It is very rare that we can get to pick all three - as in this case.I purchased this item (Transcend M5 Multi Card Reader) because I need to read/write high-capacity SDHC cards, and my old card reader (Lexar Media RW022-001) is unable to recognize them. So far, I have tested the Transcend M5 with many different brands of CF and SD/SDHC cards, and it worked flawlessly.Just for fun, I also benchmarked several CF and SD cards in both my new Transcend M5 and old Lexar reader. I’m surprised to find out that the card reader actually makes a big difference in the data transfer rate. For example: when I benchmarked the SanDisk 2GB Ultra II CF Card in my old Lexar reader, I received a rather disappointing write speed of 4.1MB/S (equivalent to ‘27x’). But the same card in the new Transcend M5 gave me a write speed of 5.9MB/S (equivalent to ‘40x’). That’s nearly 50% faster data transfer rate! Other CF and SD cards tested also showed similar performance boost.(Note that Sandisk claims the Ultra II CF is capable of 15MB/S, but that’s the maximum speed under optimal test condition)In summary, the Transcend M5 card reader is very inexpensive, gives much faster data rate than my old card reader, and seems to be very well-constructed. That makes it an excellent buy in my book.[Update on May 16, 2013]The old M5 card reader has served me well over the years, but now it is becoming the bottleneck for my latest SD and microSD cards. I recently bought the Transcend Information USB 3.0 Card Reader (TS-RDF5K) which gave 50% increase in both Read and Write speed for some of my fastest card.READ MORE
I’m not a “techie” person, so I didn’t really understand the point of having a card reader since my camera will transfer photos onto my computer for free. Well, now I’m wondering why I EVER messed around with hooking up a cable (which I can’t find 1⁄2 the time) from my camera and hacking around with the buggy out-of-date software that ships with the camera, when all this time I could have plugged this handy little device straight into my laptop’s USB port and been enjoying my photos in less than a minute (compared with the hours it sometimes takes to download them from my camera–an old Canon Powershot 800).The Transcend Multi-Card Reader allows you to take just about any relatively new memory card and download its contents straight onto your computer. No special software needed! This is a great feature when you are vacationing with a bunch of people who all have different cameras, and you want to consolidate the photos on one computer. The card reader functions like a mini-hard drive, so that you can view the contents of the memory card and only download the specific images you want onto your computer (unlike my camera, which would chug through and download all 300 images on the card just to get to the last 10 photos I snapped).Other reviewers are not exaggerating–the Transcend Multi-Card Reader is small, fast, inexpensive, well-designed, and in my humble “regular person” opinion–indispensable. When my other non-techie friends saw how great mine was, they ran out and ordered one from Amazon!Note for Mac users: I’ve used the Transcend Multi-Card Reader on both my trusty old G4 Powerbook (running Tiger OS and iPhoto ‘07) and my new MacBook Pro (running Leopard OS and iPhoto ‘08), with equal success. It’s particularly useful on the old G4 machine, which only has a 40 GB hard drive, so I don’t want to clog it up with hundreds of photos. With the card reader, I could transfer photos straight onto my auxiliary hard drive, or upload them directly onto Snapfish without clogging up my G4’s already overburdened hard drive. Also, I purchased the Transcend 8 GB memory card, which is a great value too – see link. Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6READ MORE
I bought this because I needed something that would read SDHC cards. It does that well and fast. On vacation a friend with a Sony camera wanted to download pictures to my computer to email. We couldn’t get it to read the Sony card, though it’s within spec. Tried the usual rebooting, etc. I did NOT download or use Transcend’s software. Now that I’m home, I don’t have the Sony card to troubleshoot or call the Transcend people.I still rated the unit a “5” because it’s small, light, worked well with the SDHC card and other Transcend products I’ve used have been flawless.
This thing works like a charm. The white color matches my Macbook perfectly. I just plug in my Memory Stick Pro Duo, plug in the reader to the USB port and…Voila. Pictures can easily be transferred to my desktop or my PSP. I highly recommend this product. The product itself is amazingly small, I was expecting it to be twice the size. The dimensions: (L*W*H)- (2.75”*2.75”*0.6”). This is very compact and very much so portable. The one main thing that led me to buy this reader was that it ships directly from Amazon, meaning you don’t have to pay for extra shipping.I’ll definitely buy another Transcend product in the future.
Bought this one after my camera’s usb connection broke and almost hope it broke earlier. This thing downloads my images from a CF card at least 4 times faster! Also SD & Micro SD are working great. Drivers are not necessary on windows XP. Used with several computers without any problem.
This is my fourth card reader, and my favorite. It’s faster than the other ones, the smallest, and the cable is replaceable. My only wish is that its USB cable were retractable/foldable into the unit, as my past card readers were. Not a big deal.
Nothing to complain about as it works great. Compared to some things out on the marketplace, that’s a complement.Only issue is there is no xD slot. Since I have an Olympus underwater camera, I’m stuck with xD on that device.
I mostly use this with flash cards, but I think I’ve used an SD card in it too. I have a mini Mac with OS 10.5, and it has works great so far. I just plugged it in and it worked.
Have used this product many times to download high def pics, mp3s, etc.So versatile and speedy–very pleased.
This card reader is able to handle all of the cards we have from a variety of digital cameras and cell phones. Makes downloading images a breeze.
This unit started right up after automatically loading the drivers. It is very fast and handled my 4 GB & 8GB SDHC cards without any issues.
I bought this in order to simplify dealing w/ multiple cameras. Unfortunately, my Sony camera was dropped & broken a few days later, so I haven’t been able to see the sony mem…
I bought this reader so I could upload and edit pictures for my digital picture frame. It worked great.
So far it works great with Windows XP. I am using Transcend’s HC class 6 4GB SD card.
Have to stop and start every time to get weight for a different person. The manual is not very helpful.
comments powered by DisqusI’ve been using it for about 4 months now with no problems. It has worked great on both my MAC and PC with SD/SDHC/CF cards. I have not tried any others.
