Product Reviews

I have the Megaboom, Infinity One, and Bose Mini.

I have the Megaboom, Infinity One, and Bose Mini. I also had and returned the JBL Charge 2 and the Pill XL. The Megaboom is a very durable speaker with incredible battery life. Mine plays for over 55 continuous hours at 33% volume! I recently was playing it outdoors at 75% volume and it still had an 80% charge left after 5 hours. The Megaboom is louder than everything except the Pill XL and it has less dynamic compression at high volumes than the Infinity and Bose. With respect to sound quality the Megaboom sounds clean and remains fairly distortion free even at high volumes. The Infinity, Bose, and JBL Charge 2 all produce more low frequency bass than the Megaboom. The Megaboom produces fairly punchy upper bass, but the bass does not go very “deep”. My Infinity One is very sensitive to speaker placement. Put the Infinity in a corner and it’s bass response goes way up. The Megaboom is not nearly as sensitive to placement. When both speakers are in a corner the Infinity’s bass response is much deeper and stronger than the Megaboom’s bass response. On the other hand, the Megaboom seems to be good at producing crisp treble. The Infinity One and Bose Mini both sound a bit muffled when compared to the Megaboom, which sounds very bright. The Pill XL has a nasal sound to it and sounds poor at low to mid volumes. I played test tones at the following link and the Megaboom was clearer and louder than the Infinity and Bose from 8k and up -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nklzAUrXSuMThe Megaboom allows you to run an app with some cool features and some limitations. You can update the speaker’s firmware from the app, which is a great feature. The speaker also has a Smart Bluetooth feature that allows you to turn it on and off from the app and you can schedule an alarm to turn it on and off as well. The Smart Bluetooth feature consumes some battery power and it can be turned off if you don’t need the remote on/off features. Be aware that a recharge cycle will not complete successfully if Smart Bluetooth is off. If you attempt to recharge the speaker with Smart Bluetooth off the speaker will lock up and stop recharging after about 20 minutes. When that happens the LED recharge light will go out and the speaker will not turn on, you will have to unplug the speaker before you can turn it on or continue to recharge it. I strongly suggest always recharging with Smart Bluetooth on. Edit – The charging issue was resolved with a firmware update available June 2015.The UE app has an EQ, but it does not work like a typical EQ does. If you attempt to boost something it just cuts other frequencies to create the “boost”. For example, if you boost the lowest frequency for bass it doesn’t actually boost the bass. It just cuts the other frequencies and the speaker loses volume. The end result is you turn the volume up higher with every frequency except bass cut so the bass seems “boosted”. Consider the EQ as a set of filters that will only cut frequencies, it will not boost anything. I only have 1 speaker so I did not try the double-up options.UE advertises the speaker as being able to produce 360 degree sound. The speaker has a much wider sound stage than the Infinity One, the Bose Mini, and the JBL Charge 2, but I would not call it 360 degrees. It is closer to 270 degrees because there is definitely a dead spot when the volume buttons are facing you. Frequency response is fairly uniform in all other positions, but it does sound best if one driver is facing you. With that being said, the Megaboom is certainly much less directional than the other speakers I have used. The Megaboom is a nice speaker, but I deducted one point for the recharging issue with Smart Bluetooth off (to save battery power) and the poor EQ implementation. If you only plan to use the speaker indoors, you prefer bass over treble, and you don’t need very high volumes then you will be happier with the Infinity One or the Bose Mini. If you want a speaker that you can take outdoors, you prefer treble response over bass response, you want high volumes, and you want a very long battery run time then the Megaboom might be perfect for you.** Update 6/11/2015 **I noticed that there was a new firmware version available in the UE app. I applied the update and the speaker now charges properly with Bluetooth Smart off. Battery life continues to impress me. 50% volume plays for over 48 hours and 1 or 2 steps down from 100% plays for over 7 hours. The Bluetooth range is more impressive than the range of my Infinity One. I can leave my iPad on the second floor of my house and walk all around the first floor of my house and in my garage without any drop outs. I was very happy to see the charging issue resolved with the firmware update so I decided to change my overall rating to 5 stars. Most manufacturers don’t even offer the ability to update a speaker’s firmware.

A battle between portability and sound quality

Edit 8/14/16If you’re looking for a portable speaker that maximizes sound volume with good quality, I would recommend the Aiwa Exos-9, over the Klipsch KMC 3 in most cases. It’s twice as expensive, but if you really want something with battery power on a regular basis it has slightly better sound and a rechargeable battery. The Megaboom has become a bit more appealing as it goes down in price, and its portability makes it a great choice if you’re on the go. But for around the house listening I always use the Klipsch or non-battery powered speaker.———————————————–I’m a sound geek. I started building PA speakers in high school, and my house is filled with different speaker setups. Portable speakers have always been appealing to me, but they always come with sacrifices. Thus far there are no perfect portable speakers, you need to pick one based on your needs and planned usage. If you want something easy to carry and durable, the Megaboom is a good choice. If you want music to shake the neighborhood and don’t mind carrying a big speakerbox, there are better options such as Klipsch KMC 3. However, large speakers such as the KMC 3 use D cell batteries, which can be costly to replace, and rechargeable ones have iffy qualify. I own two KMC 3, and eventually gave up using them as portable speakers (but they are nice for plug in speakers)If you’re shopping for portable speaker (emphasis on portable), you have to come to terms with the fact it’s not going to sound as good as a plug in speaker. It just can’t exist.Part of the issue has to do with the nature of acoustics and speaker box design…in general the smaller the speaker enclosure, the worse the sound will be. That’s why subwoofers are in huge enclosures. Where space isn’t an issue (club or concert), the speakers tend to be very large. All these portable bluetooth speakers coming out are trying to pack a ton of sound in a small package, and there’s only so much you can squeeze in without making sacrifices to audio quality and battery life.ProsThe Megaboom does not have “mega” sound or size, but for it’s size the sound is better than other comparatively sized bluetooth speakers. It just doesn’t have a lot of bass…the sound doesn’t distort much at full volume at least. It’s priced on par with other bluetooth speakers of similar caliber, although I wouldn’t pay more than $250 for it personally. The speakers truly had 360 degree sound, and by placing in a corner or against a wall you can achieve fuller sound. The speaker is the size of a 24 ounce beer, so it’s easy to toss in a backpack. You can throw this in a pool, and not worry about water damage. The exterior surface is easy to grip and durable. You can also pair up to 6 Megabooms together. If you spend that much money to get 6 of these, you should probably give your money to someone else who will buy something better.ConsSound quality. The biggest and most important issue. I’m just not impressed. However, I’m also someone who’s been frustrated with portable speakers as a whole, and I had high expectations when throwing down $300 on a portable speaker. Would I buy this over the UE Boom? Yes. Would I buy 2 of these? Probably not. Are there better portable speakers around the same size as this? No. Are there better portable speakers that are bigger than this? Yes.

Amazed

Received the Megaboom today…… Absolutely amazing sound! Walked it out to the back corner of my yard, put it on the fence post, and walked back and sat on the patio 30 ft away. It lights up the whole backyard. Ordering a second for stereo sound. I’m thoroughly impressed at the sound of this little speaker. Bass, and clarity are excellent. Works perfectly with our Echo Dot.

… from taxes and stuff and this speaker omg i love this thing

I got this because I got a lot of money from taxes and stuff and this speaker omg i love this thing, I don’t always use it because sometimes the music I listen too I don’t want everyone hearing and judging me for, I put this in my bathroom once with the fan on, my bedroom basically shares a wall with it and I was In my room and I could hear it clear, if you live in an apartment like I do don’t worry it can go pretty quiet and very loud, sometimes I put my phone in a ziploc bag and take my phone and the speaker in the shower to listen to music,I don’t have to charge it that often which is awesome and overall I would highly reccomend this speaker

BEST SPEAKER EVER!!!

This speaker is WELL worth the money, it is soooo loud and works really well in long distances. The battery last me all day on a 14 hour shift, and it charges quicker then ANY battery I’ve ever chargedI Love THIS SPEAKER

BOOM BOOM BOOM!

Its got loud and clear sound AND its idiot proof! The only thing I can complain about is its battery life. It is only good at 50% volume. If you blast it, don’t expect it to keep pounding like the energizer bunny.

Three Stars

Love the speaker but I was unable to charge it because the USB cord was missing.

360 degrees of AWESOME!

Beautiful Sound, clarity, robust design, and AMAZING battery life. Would recommend to anybody seeking out a fair sized bluetooth speaker, that can still be carried in a bag, but…

This product has serious battery problems

This speaker worked great for a couple of months and then the battery just basically died. I also only used this product 5-6 times during that couple of months.

Worked fine BUT.

Wouldn’t hold a charge. Sent it back.

The charger we received for this item is defective. …

The charger we received for this item is defective. Every time I plug it into an outlet, it sizzles!

Love it. One of my most satisfying purchases. I have used it constantly for months and months with no issues.

Absolutely love it. One of my most satisfying purchases. I have bought three total now, some being gifts for family. Runs longer than your iPhone batteries or iPad.

Phenomenal

I was recently on a trip and had multiple people using these. I was blown away by the sound they were producing, so I had to get one for myself.

I bought this speaker 3 weeks ago and the bottom speaker already went out, was well taken care of. Do not recommend this to anyone.

Won’t hold charge….,

This unit will not hold a charge. I’ve tried again and again and I’m tired. Too bad, I’ve had good luck with UE before. Don’t buy this unit.

Fantastic Speaker

Best Bluetooth speaker I have owned by far. This thing performs above my expectations both indoors and outdoors.
