This review is for: ViewHD SPDIF / TOSLINK Optical Digital Audio 4X2 True Matrix with Remote Control | VHD-SM4X2I didn’t even know such a device existed. With the next-gen consoles out, I had a dilemma. My soundbar only has 2 optical inputs. I had my Xbox360 in one and the PS3 in the other. Now with the PS4 and XboxOne, I needed 2 more. I could pull the plugs each time, but that would be a hassle. After some searching online, saw plenty of cheap solutions with so-so results, then came to find this little gem. 4 inputs! Perfect! Never heard of this brand, but the reviews gave me some comfort.Soon as I got it, plugged all 4 systems into the 4 inputs, then one Toslink cable to go into my soundbar, done. All I have to do now is turn on the switch, select the input and I’m getting DD/DTS goodness.Best of all, I now have one free input in the soundbar.
I don’t usually write product reviews, but this product fit what I needed so well that I had to write one.Sources from which I needed to get sound:Panasonic UT50 Smart TV appsPS4U-Verse IPTV BoxSources to which I needed to get sound:Panasonic sound barTurtle Beach HeadsetIn preparation for the launch of PS4, I wanted to get all of the necessary components together to make everything work as well as possible, and I wanted to add a Turtle Beach headset. The sound bar only has two inputs. Originally I had everything connected via HDMI to the TV, and then ran the optical output from the TV to the Panasonic sound bar; however, the TV’s optical output does not pass Dolby Digital from connected HDMI sources. I ended up purchasing the ViewHD Matrix 4x2 switcher. I now run all three audio sources to the switcher, and then I run one output from the switcher to the sound bar, and the second output from the switcher to the headset. I then use my Harmony One remote to do all of the switching for me.On the Harmony remote I have devices set up for TV (Speakers), PS4 (Speakers), TV Apps, TV (Headset), PS4 (Headset), Bluetooth Audio. The Harmony One remote works perfectly with it.
This little device solved an issue that had been plaguing me for months; however, note that I’m not using it for it’s audio extraction abilities. Some media devices, like my PS4, use EDID (Extended display identification data) to identify what the display, TV, monitor, etc can reproduce. My TV is an LG 55LF6100 and has the ability to pass-through Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio from its HDMI input to an optical output. When my PS4 would startup and initiate the HDMI ‘handshake’, the PS4 would think that my TV would only allow 2-channel audio. Older devices like the PS3 could be configured to send 5.1 bitstream audio always, but the PS4 relies on EDID even after configuring the PS4 to send Dolby Digital or DTS via HDMI so no 5.1 audio was being sent.Enter the ViewHD Audio Extractor. I connected the device in-line with my HDMI connections between the PS4 and TV, set the EDID selector to 5.1, and Viola! Dolby Digital and DTS is now sent to my TV, passed through, and sent via optical cable to my 5.1 setup. The Audio Extractor tells the PS4 what audio and video settings it accepts and then passes them through to the TV.Note that the VHD-H2HSAs and the VHD-H2HSAi are essentially the same device. The VHD-H2HSAi is for British setups, but it worked fine for me.
This review is for the 4x2 Matrix switch. I use this box to connect my Panasonic Viera TV, DirectTV set top box, and Oppo BluRay player to my Sonos Soundbar and Sub. This box is critical for that setup because the Playbar has only one input, and it’s optical. The other reason this box is needed is because although the TV has an optical output, the TV downgrades multichannel program material to stereo on the optical output. The Matrix allows routing the multi-channel audio from the input source directly to the Playbar, bypassing the TV.Pros1. Small and relatively inexpensive.2. Performs a needed function that’s hard to find on any other device in that size and price range3. Can be controlled via IR with with Roomie RemoteProblems1. The IR receive window seems to have a narrow field of view, so I had difficulty controlling the matrix from across the room with an IR blaster. None of my other components have this difficulty. It looks like the IR receiver is very small and slightly recessed into the front panel. A larger flush-mourned IR receiver would probably work much better.2. The Playbar has a feature where it will stop playing music via the network input and switch to the optical input as soon as it senses data on the optical input. This is intended to make it more convenient to transition from listening to music to watching TV. The problem here is that when I connect my DirecTV set top box to an input on the Matrix, the Sonos player detects data on the matrix output even when the DirecTV box is off. So, to reliably use the Playbar as a Sonos music player, I must turn off the Matrix, which is annoying. This appears to be a problem with the matrix, because this does not happen when I directly connect the DirecTV box to the Sonos player.3. I usually experience several brief audio drop outs (less than 1 second) at random times during the course of watching a movie through the switch. This doesn’t happen when bypassing the switch, so again this appears to be a problem with the Matrix switch. It looks like other reviewers are using this Matrix for broadcasting, so presumably they’d notice the dropout issues also. Maybe my unit is somehow defective.I see Amazon now offers a 3x1 switch. I don’t need two outputs, so I may try the 3x1 switch instead. The 3x1 switch also includes a remote IR receiver, which may solve my IR remote control problems.UPDATE: 12/8/2013I received the 3X1 switch and it fixes two of my three issues above. The 3x1 switch includes a remote IR receiver “puck.” This works better than the built-in IR receiver on the 4x2 matrix. I can control the 3x1 using an IR remote from 15 feet away. The second issue with the audio cutting over to TV mode, even when the DirecTV box is OFF, has gone away with the 3X1 switch. I still am experiencing audio drop outs, but I need to test more to make sure the drop outs are not due to the DirecTV set top box.
This item worked well for about 25 days.It then failed to connect for a good 30 minutes before suddenly working again. Worked for another two weeks, and now does not work at all! I’m using this device for extracting audio from a Fire TV box and passing through the HDMI video (to DVI) signal to an older television. I tested the HDMI to DVI cable straight to the TV and the picture was just fine. Passing through this device fails. Tried with three different HDMI cables to the device. It simply no longer passes through video. Audio works just fine.I’d stay away.
This is exactly what I needed to connect an old Bose Cinemate 1 SR Sound Bar to my Bose SoundTouch system.
Great product I searched at local stores for similar product. This was way better than what was available and spent less aggravation an less gas!.
The remote quit working, and can’t be fixed. Waste of money.
I had issues with the 2nd optical port
So far it works OK except that I have to get out of the chair so I can hold the remote like 2-3 feet away for it to work. Very annoying..
This is just what I needed. It works well and serves the purpose.
it meets my expectation the first dayIt fail to work one the second daydon’t buy this
Seems to work well so far. Got 3 units plugged into it and the switching works at a decent speed. Only thing that sucks is no remote.
very easy to use. just plug it to your speakers/amp and plug your devices to it.an excellent choice for those who only have one input and more than one device with…
