It’s Like a Window-Wormhole; Make Sure You Don’t Lose Your Pets & Kids – Carol-Anne-style – to the 4K Ultra HD Twilight Zone

I was looking forward to seeing what a ‘4K Ultra HD 120Hz 50” Smart TV’ looks like once it’s been translated from techy Ad-speak into something real and plugged in. I’ve been disappointed with HD LED’s in the past, spending good money on a good brand for a picture that made me nostalgic for something with tubes. Fortunately, that was not the case with this 4K Ultra HD mofo. The picture resolution is fantastic. I’m just blurting that out because it looks so damn good; I’m not into 3-D at all, but I like clear, crisp imagery with 50000 shades of purple, and this TV delivers. It’s not just the resolution. The frame-to-frame transitions are so sharp, it looks unlike any TV I’ve seen. Using it without the theatre speakers hooked up, the sound was surprisingly rich and full, and at 50% provided all the decibels needed. There was no trace of distortion. If you crank it to 100%, that might cause slight damage, so… don’t do it. If you need it louder than 80%, get surround-sound speakers and annoy your neighbours correctly. Then there’s the ‘Smart TV’ thing. Like any Smart technology worth it’s silicon, it’s all ‘smart’ and whatnot, just so WE don’t have to be. It was hooked up and softly radiating in my direction a half-hour after it arrived. Other reviewers have mentioned some of the apps don’t work in Canada, but the ones I use occasionally – Netflix and YouTube – work fine. I’m not much of a gamer, so I can’t speak to it’s suitability for World of Warcraft. For watching Game of Thrones? Hell yes. I even went crazy and ordered the 4$-a-month Ultra-HD upgrade for Netflix. Next I’ll be upgrading from peanut butter to caviar. As far as negatives… well, there was no candy or licorice anywhere in the box, a rude oversight, I thought. Also, it was too big for my entertainment center, so it’s just hanging out on the floor until inspiration or irritation forces a resolution. Making a TV that doesn’t fit in my entertainment center was a massive design fail, so in my Big Book of the Blessed and the Damned, black marks now reside next to the names of everyone in Vizio’s engineering department. That’ll teach ‘em. ;) So no, I’ve not found any problems as of yet, but I promise I’ll try harder. If I can’t find one of the issues others have mentioned, maybe I’ll make something up. ‘Hundreds of centipedes came skittering out of the vents’? Mmmm… maybe.Vizio’s not a brand I’ve purchased before, and I have no clue as to their reputation, or their tech support, etc. But as it stands now, I’m very impressed. They’ve loaded this Spartan-but-stylish frame with all the K’s and P’s you need to make it perform just as well as models priced another 300 or 400$ higher. For 800$, you’re getting a great TV for watching… um… TV. And movies. And perhaps more; I know that the instantaneous way it responds to the remote is a good sign, compared to more expensive models of a couple years ago that looked dull and responded sluggishly… but I’ll be back with details. Once I’ve had a bit more quality-time with my television, I’ll be able to say my 5-star review was thoroughly justified. Or… if you never hear another word from me, and then there’s an obituary reporting I died in a mysterious TV explosion… consider it knocked down a star.

the TV is AT LEAST pretty good, and maybe very good

Well, the TV is AT LEAST pretty good, and maybe very good. We like the picture very much. It takes a while to get the settings right to get the best picture out of it, but if you google words like “setting up your 4K tv,” you can find some articles that will make this much easier. Allso, some folks ahve commented on the sound going up and down while you are watching program. We have seen this too. Its not that big of a deal. There is only a minor difference. Occasionally you will be watching something and the sound will get a little lower for a few seconds. We have it plugged into our stereo, and the sound is fantastic through there. Unlike many of the new 4K TVs, there are actually old-style RCA output plugs, so it makes it a snap to hook up to your stereo even if its an older model. You don’t have to mess with bluetooth or anything, and even if you don’t have a stereo near your TV, you can buy a cheap soundbar for about $50.However, that’s not why I am writing this review. It developed a problem two days after we bought it. We had the HDMI wire from the cable box plugged into the 4K HDMI socket (there are 5 HDMI inputs, but only ONE of them is actuially a 4K input. The others are all regular 1080p HDMI). When we were watching programs in the lower clarity range (the non-HDMI channels), after the TV has been on for an hour or so the picture would black out, and the screen would say “no signal.” We would have to plug the lead into tone of the other HDMI inputs. We called Vizio, explained the problem to the very pleasant young lady, and she said they would replace the TV. No arguments. Five days or so later we got a call from the pick-up contractor. They sent over two very nice young men, and they boxed up our TV, unpacked and replaced it with the new one, helped us hook up the replacement, and took the old one away. No hassle, no issues. They were in and out in 30 minutes. I’ve never had a better service experience with an electronics company!!

nice tv

Awesome!!

Fantastic picture!!

Never buy a Vizio.

Never buy a Vizio. They don’t last and the warranty is a joke. Do yourself a favor and buy a good brand

Very Disappointing!

very disappointing. Until this product we very happy with Vizio Tvs we have owned. Sometimes the picture goes black. Only power cycling tv clears it up.

Fantastic as 4096x2160 computer monitor

I bought the Vizio D50u-D1 50-inch for use as a 4k (4096x2160) computer monitor. Works great, especially for software development, but beware that it will ruin you for lower-res…

Sound is muffled to me

Purchased the equivalent 2015 model of this TV in 2015 …

Purchased the equivalent 2015 model of this TV in 2015. The power supply is shot and the TV won’t power on, there’s nothing Vizio can/will do for me.

A terrific TV

Exactly as described! No picture/display issues and very easy to set up. Completely satisfied with my purchase.
