I prefer these reusable Welch Allyn otic speculums over disposable ones because they are more comfortable for patients, especially children. I also get a better view with these because of their cannulating shape. The trick is cleaning them with alcohol between patients and not losing them. Occasionally, a bent paper clip (or curette) and an alcohol swab are needed when cerumen gets in there. The 2.5 and 3.0 are invaluable for the tiny patients. Wiki Deals had a fantastic price of $11.50. I got them faster than the expected delivery date. Even though I’m not a Prime Amazon member, these arrived within two business days in a small padded envelope via USPS from Wiki Deals! (I have a W-A otoscope with a seemingly obsolete model# from the 80’s. All the Welch-Allyn speculums that look like the ones I need have fit so far, over the years.)
I prefer these reusable speculums to the disposable ‘KleenSpec’ type. Yes, there are only 4 of them, one in each size: 5, 4, 3, 2.5 mm. They are sturdier than the disposables, and also have a more rounded tip which doesn’t hurt as much if you hit the canal walls when you have a wiggly pediatric patient. Yes, they work with both the old and newer ‘Macroview’ heads. I was worried about this because I don’t see the little wings in the product photos that hold it in place. All 4 nest well in the case under the otoscope. I clean them with a Q-tip and isopropyl. In my mind, cleaning after each use is worth the gain in patient comfort. I was quite disappointed that the smallest size still seems too big to maneuver around wax in little baby ears compared to the smallest ‘old school’ speculum. So for babies up to about 1 year old, I still prefer the old school version, which is a very critical age for ear checking. However, it is still slightly smaller than the smallest KleenSpec which many physicians use for babies. So I only gave it 3 stars since I feel the smallest size is still too big.Photo 1: The reusuable speculum working on the classic and the Macroview heads.Photo 2: Comparing the 2 sizes of ‘Kleenspec’ and the 4 reusables.Photo 3: The Kleenspec tip is sharper and hurt a little more when/if it hits the canal.Photo 4: All 4 tips nesting in the case.Photo 5: Very small old school tip on the left, 2.75mm KleenSpec, and the 2.5mm reusable.
These otoscope specula fit well on the welch allyn otoscope I purchased (the Welch Allyn 22820 Pocketscope) I was worried, and I like the fact that they are reusable. They are easily cleaned and stored for use later. Much cheaper than disposable!
Pleased
Over priced.
Works as needed and perfect for nursing students (or anyone else who needs such things). Also good for home use too!
They are not as thick as pictured, but will work fine for what I need
The smallest one, 2.5, had a rough spot or flaw on the inside edge at the very tip causing pain the first time I attempted to use it. It is very difficult to get a child to trust you once you’ve already poked her.
Not worth the price. It was OK.
Didn’t fit the product it say it was able to work with
perfect so when you freeze anything it will be confined to one small area
Wishe there were more for the price works well
Great for what I needed.
use a straw….dont waste your money…..or ask in the doctors office if you can get 3 sizes of the ear protectors for the things they use to look in your ears…..waste of money
Purchased these to aid in wart removal by protecting the healthy skin around the warts while applying a topical freezing agent. Works great!
very fast delivery and just as advertised
